American Classics - Bernstein: Chichester Psalms, Etc
$12.79 Personnel: Max Hansen, Herbert Hildebrand, Josma Selim, Oskar Karlweis, Leo Monosson, Greta Keller, Richard Tauber, Zarah Leander, Marcel Wittrisch (vocals). The front cover to ZYX's Ralph Benatzky: Seine Gröáten Erfolge (His Greatest Hits) is a little misleading. It is a reproduction of a caricature of composer Benatzky, seated at the piano, and might lead to the mistaken impression that this is a collection featuring the esteemed Czech light music composer as an interpreter of his own works. Benatzky does play on at least one track, accompanying second wife Josma Selim on piano in the patter song "Anette." However, Ralph Benatzky: Seine Gröáten Erfolge is a collection of 16 vintage recordings of Benatzky's popular tunes, recorded between the early '20s and about 1937; it is hard to tell, as there are no dates supplied for any of the recordings. There aren't any liner notes, either, so damned be anyone who comes to this without knowing who Ralph Benatzky was. Benatzky was one of the shining lights of the Weimar period in Berlin, a composer of operetta and racy cabaret songs that provided an antidote to the vaguely patriotic fare that had begun to dominate the work of composers such as Franz Lehár, yet lighter and less acrid than the deeply fatalistic Die Dreigroschenoper of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. For those who cannot speak German, comprehending what this is all about is going to be tough, as no lyrics are provided. However, for those who do, or do not mind listening without regard to lyric content, Ralph Benatzky: Seine Gröáten Erfolge is a nice tray of appetizers, if short of a full meal. There are some enduringly charming bits here, particularly actor Max Hansen's enthusiastic delivery of the title tune to Benatzky's biggest hit, Im Weissen Rössl (The White ...
