LOST SIDES features 12 singles and rare tracks from ethereal British rock trio Doves including "Break Me Gently" and "Hit The Ground Running."

Not to be confused with the limited-edition promotional album of the same name, Lost Sides is a double disc of B-sides, rarities, and remixes from Doves' outstanding first two albums, Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast. Die-hard fans will most likely own tracks such as "Zither," "Valley," "Northenden," and "Willow's Song" from previous single releases, but Lost Sides offers more than your typical B-disc. The loyalist and the casual listener will enjoy the structure of Lost Sides because Doves is one of those bands that doesn't seem to write songs of filler quality. If anything, Lost Sides reaffirms the power of Doves' dream pop sound while remembering the beauty of their first two albums. The songs included here could have very well ended up on either record, because they are that good. From the gospel redesign of "Satellites [Soulsavers Remix]" and the building hope of "The Sulphur Man [Rebelski Remix]" to the Madchester-like pop moment of "Your Shadow Lay Across My Life" and the free soul of "Down to Sea," one cannot deny the real rock & roll spirit of Doves. Lost Sides is a fine collection for old and new fans alike, a definitive must-have for all Doves completists. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Released as a promotional vehicle for Lost Souls by Heavenly in a run of only 1,250 copies, Lost Sides collects 12 songs that didn't make it onto Doves' debut album. All of the songs on the collection would see release across the various singles extracted from Lost Souls. Unlike many a Brit-pop B-side collection, Lost Sides doesn't really work that well as a cohesive whole. Some of the songs are variations on album cuts, others kind of meander in stifled or dated grooves, and two or three tracks are obvious throwaways. But enough charm peaks out of the corners to elevate a number of the songs and make Lost Sides or the singles worthwhile. The bombastic anthemic rock of "Darker" sees Doves at their most aggressive, experimenting with vibes reminiscent of Talk Talk. These vibes continue on "Meet Me at the Pier," as edgy guitar jabs contrast most pleasantly with Jimi Goodwin's sweet humming. "Valley" and "Your Shadow Lay Across My Life" both would have been fine fits on Lost Souls, as both songs feature the band's trademark swirling bombast and strong melodies. Perhaps best of all, and not really indicative of the band's usual sonic territory, is "Acoustic No. 1," which features dynamic chugging acoustic guitars that simply and delightfully embed themselves into one's brain for the remainder of the day. Lost Sides certainly isn't essential listening for casual fans, and even hardcore fans won't be that impressed, since nothing to be found here represents the band at the top of its game. But the collection is pleasant enough while it lasts. ~ Tim DiGravina

Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) 3 stars

2 stars It is B side stuff
I thought this would be a selection of songs that never made it onto the other releases and there are only a couple of these. Most of this release consists of different takes of the songs you know on the other two albums, and a couple of the takes are inferior, even amature, sounding. It's something different for true Doves fans only, IMO. Great band.

4 stars A must have for true Doves fans
I have the 2 disc set and it is fabulous. It's incredible to hear the progression and changes they made to the songs/demos and finally hear the end result on the Lost Souls and Last Broadcast cds. I recommend getting the 2 disc set if you can find it.

The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty ...

Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking ...
Don't Tell Me Now
Halo Benders Don't Tell Me Now CD  (1996)

Lost Sides
CD $13.85  Audio Samples
Don't Tell Me Now sees Calvin Johnson's baritone and Doug Martsch's high-pitched whine working with and against each other to catchy effect. Lyrically obtuse, with subject matter praising draft dodgers as heroes and a supremely catchy theme song about themselves, the Halo Benders create a guitar-heavy indie poptopia throughout the album. Martsch might not attack his guitar in as epic a fashion as he does with Built to Spill, but his trademark sound is on display throughout. Built to Spill fans might consider this a Built to Spill album as recorded by Martsch at a circus. If that metaphor holds up, Johnson becomes the ringleader, singing about all sorts of mundane things and randomly spouting clichés. Martsch in turn becomes the more serious guitar god and a more realistic conscience. The album might seem scatterbrained, but the mix of vocal styles makes for charming harmonies amid mostly enjoyable hooks. God Don't Make No Junk might be a little more charming and The Rebel's Not In might be better produced and more melodic, but Don't Tell Me Now has more than a few diamonds in its rough. It might be smart to note that each album contains ...

Syklubb Fra Halvete
Fe-Mail Syklubb Fra Halvete CD  (2003)

Lost Sides
CD $11.85  Audio Samples
Together, Maja Ratkje and Hild Sofie Tafjord represent the electronic half of the all-female improv quartet Spunk -- even though the former is also a singer and the latter plays French horn, among other instruments. Their duo, Fe-Mail, could be described as a female answer to Jazzkammer. Besides Norwegian origins, the two units share a taste for noise constructions and a subtle, dry sense of humor. Syklubb fra Haelvete is released by the label TV5 as a pink-colored vinyl LP. The calendar-type swimsuit picture on the cover offers another example of Ratkje's fondness for mischievous misleading and contrasts. If anything, the seductive, over-feminine photograph doesn't prepare you for the aural assault it wraps up. The pair produces harsh noise out of samplers and electronics, adding occasional voice, harmonica, and miscellaneous acoustic instruments whenever they feel like it. "Modogin" and "Water Music" feature rare vocals from Ratkje. The latter track is the LP's highlight; relatively quiet, it is made of processed water sounds (or what sounds like it), feedback, a couple of chords plucked on a zither (or maybe directly on the strings of a piano), sampled voice, and slabs of noise. Through its extremes it reaches a beautiful ...

CD $9.69  3.7 stars
An infamous album by London scene maker Screaming Lord Sutch, who, among other things, claimed to be a genuine Earl and to have started the long hair craze of the '60s, and ran for Parliament on the youth ticket. His infamy bought him some heavy friends indeed for his first LP. Jimmy Page (who produced and played), John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins and Noel Redding are all on hand to support Sutch's R&B retreads ...
Before My Time
Byron Short Before My Time CD  (2006)

Lost Sides
CD $18.99
Byron Short hasn’t long been on the Brisbane music scene, in fact, he hasn’t long been out of high school, but he is already making waves in the industry, forging his own unique and exciting musical path. With his debut album ‘Before My Time’ just independently released, Byron is poised, if not destined, for one hell of a ride.It has been an interesting road for the 19 year old newcomer up to this point. Fresh out of high school last year and with over a hundred original songs to his name, Byron began performing acoustic versions of his songs, wowing unsuspecting crowds with his unique voice and guitar playing at open mic nights across the city.Meanwhile, a copy of Byron’s debut EP ‘King James’ (2005) found it’s way into the hands of Daniel Jones at Meridien Musik and in August 2005, Byron went into Meridien Musik Studio to record his debut album ‘Before My Time’ with Jones engineering. The album was tracked in a little over a week with Byron handling all vocals and instruments apart of drums and percussion, as well as producing. The resulting record is a testament to Byron’s talent not only as a singer /instrumentalist but also as a songwriter of great depth and range for someone so young. The album encompasses just about every modern musical style imaginable, including rock, blues, folk, jazz and metal yet manages to group them all together under a catchy, pop aesthetic. Now with a stellar backing band to assist him in his electrifying live shows, Byron is making his presence felt nationally and overseas as well as in and around Brisbane with radio stations in Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles and London picking up on several tracks from the forthcoming debut album, including the single ‘Who Do You Love’.2006 promises ...
