(2 Customer Reviews)
PEACE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
What sets pianist Jim Brickman apart from much of Windham Hill's roster has been a certain earnest, emotive, evocative style, which unfolds beyond the borders of any genre, somewhere in the woods outside of the jazz, classical, and new age worlds. This music can easily lend itself to the spirit of Christmas, so it's not surprising that Brickman would take to the holidays and record PEACE, his second Christmas album, following 1997's highly-successful THE GIFT.
As with THE GIFT, PEACE is a balance of original Brickman compositions and timeless classics. Also like its predecessor, PEACE is peppered with guest vocalists who pop up to add lyrical cheer. Most satisfying are gospel veterans the Blind Boys of Alabama's haunting yet uplifting throwback take on "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" and gospel up-and-comer Kristy Starling's rendering of Brickman's original composition, the sweetly soulful "Sending You a Little Christmas." Of particular note among the instrumentals is the sober, almost somber take on "Jingle Bells," casting a different light on a much-traveled road. PEACE takes up where THE GIFT left off, a gentle yet inspiring record that could be played late on Christmas Day as the kids experiment with their new toys, the fire still roars with Yuletide fever, and the world seems comfortably aglow.

Jim Brickman's accomplished composing and piano playing paint a musical picture that remains in some way a constantly blank canvas, always open to the listener's interpretations. The songs on PICTURE THIS, his third album, have the simple, memorable melodies and easy catchiness of pop music, but also a potent sense of emotion and intimacy. Country singer Martina McBride joins Brickman ...

| | Jim Brickman Love Songs And Lullabies CD (2002)
Peace songs
$11.59 One part George Winston, one part J. Crew model, Jim Brickman purveys easy-listening piano ballads with tender themes and upbeat lyrics. On this 2002 release the "love songs" of the title are not solely romantic in nature--they could easily be addressed to a child or even to God. And the "lullabies" are not just for children, but for adults in need of a soothing respite from the world.
With the help of guest vocalist Amy Sky (and musical inspiration from J. S. Bach), lines from I Corinthians:13 become the graceful "Love Never Fails." The traditional children's song "I See the Moon" gets a sweet, lush treatment and a rare vocal turn from Brickman himself. Vocal ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Peace album
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret ...

| | Carla Cook Dem Bones CD (2001)
Peace music CDs
$14.59 Carla Cook's Dem Bones follows her critically acclaimed and commercially successful Maxjazz debut, It's All About Love. The Grammy-nominated artist taps into her diverse musical influences and presents a musical autobiography reflected in 11 songs. The precision of her multi-hued voice is accompanied by such great musicians as Cyrus Chestnut on piano; Fred Wesley, Craig Harris, and Tyrone Jefferson on trombones; James Genus on bass; and Billy Kilson on drums. Packed with straight-ahead jazz, the crowning glory on this CD is the approach she uses on the title cut, "Dem Bones." Tastefully arranged for three trombones (her voice being the fourth "bone") Cook's presentation adds a modern dimension to the use of the trombone -- both muted and open -- as an expressive "voice" in a jazz composition. Wesley, Craig, and Jefferson show just how expressive in a wonderfully improvised section that features them slurring and sliding on their "bones." Another great song is "For the Elders," a bebop piece that shines with Cyrus Chestnut's light piano stylings set against ...
