WEATHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET continues Jeff Greinke's journey into the inner realms of percussive, electro-acoustic ambient music. Deeply textured, atmospheric, and ethereal, yet often centered around pulses and rhythmic patterns, Greinke's work often recalls that of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell. On one hand, the surging bass and throbbing beats that buoy cuts like "Spin" wouldn't sound out of place in a down-tempo DJ's set.
But Greinke is also at home in the airier sphere of "Big Stride" and "Flight," synth-based compositions that give the listener the sensation of floating through clouds. At his best, as on the opening "Sunday Afternoon," Greinke is able to merge the two tendencies into a sound that is visceral, propulsive, expansive, and suspended at once. Greinke's layered compositions never feel random or rote, and the meticulous attention he pays to balancing the elements in these sound-paintings puts the aptly named WEATHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET a cut above similar works in this field.
Jeff Greinke is a musician, composer, performer, sound sculptor, and visual artist who is known worldwide for his unique sound. Through a highly developed process of layering, Jeff composes and performs music rich in texture, depth, mood, and subtle detail. Using various acoustic and electronic instruments, found sounds, and extended studio techniques, Jeff sculpts sound worlds that conjure a strong sense of place, hovering somewhere between the exotic and the familiar.Jeff Greinke began composing and performing music in 1980 while studying meteorology at Pennsylvania State University. After moving to Seattle in 1982, Jeff formed the production company and recording label, INTREPID, through which he produced his first LP, Cities in Fog. He has since released over twenty other recordings on various U.S. and European labels. His most recent is Weather From Another Planet, released June 2003 on FWD. Jeff's music can also be heard on numerous compilation recordings. He has composed music for film, video, dance, theatre, radio, and art installations. Jeff has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe and has performed in China, Canada, and Mexico. He has also been a member of numerous ensembles and is founder of the group LAND. Jeff's current ongoing project is a collaboration with former Sky Cries Mary vocalist Anisa Romero called Hana. In April 2001 they released their second album entitled Omen. $6.15 CHICAGO II remains a classic album, encapsulating its time (1969) in all its tumult and glory. The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. Chicago, with their then-new ...
