In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop. The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. Lee Mallory, Randy Swickard, Allison Buft (background vocals). Recorded between 1966 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Dotti Holmberg. Although Holmberg did not release solo recordings in the 1960s, she recorded fairly often in the studio and at home, yielding enough material to produce this 17-song mixture of 1966-1970 studio productions and home demos. Her Curt Boettcher association is what will probably draw a lot of collectors' attention to her work in the first place, though as it happens just four of these tracks (all from 1966) were produced by Boettcher. Those Boettcher cuts are, well, typical Boettcher: candy-sweet melodies and lyrics matched to multi-layered Baroque pop production, with Holmberg's vocals verging on the childlike (not always to good effect). Holmberg only wrote one of the Boettcher-overseen songs, but actually did pen most of the other songs, which project a flower-powery naďveté that can be both affecting and overdone in its fantasy-ridden rose-colored hue. If you're in the right mood, it's not bad stuff, as Holmberg has a decent knack for blending the merry and the melancholy in her melodies, and her voice does have a singularly high, keening, almost transparently trusting quality. The eight home demos, though far less sophisticated in their arrangements (mostly featuring just folky acoustic guitars and light percussion rattles), are in some aspects preferable to the studio ...
