| | Chemical Brothers Singles '93-'03 CD Chemical Brothers Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Celebrating 10 years of innovative electronica and party-starting dance grooves, this 13-track Chemical Brothers collection moves chronologically through the numerous highlights of the duo's recording career. Groundbreaking early singles "Song to the Siren" and "Chemical Beats" offer the first examples of their unique combination of hip-hop beats and electro-distortion hooks, before "Leave Home" ushers in the arrival of the landmark EXIT PLANET DUST album. Although SINGLES surprisingly omits "Life Is Sweet (with Tim Burgess of the Charlatans UK) and "Alive Alone" (featuring a then-unknown Beth Orton), it does includes other excellent tracks such as "Setting Sun" (one of two Noel Gallagher collaborations), "Block Rockin' Beats," "The Private Psychedelic Reel" (with Jonathan Donahue of Mercury Rev), and "The Test" (featuring Richard Ashcroft). And as outstanding icing on their birthday cake, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons present two previously unreleased tracks, the funky "Get Yourself High," and the mystic, majestic chime of "The Golden Path" (featuring the Flaming Lips).
SINGLES '93-'03 is a limited edtion and contains a bonus CD.

Singles '93-'03 album
$10.39 In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop.
The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Without them, Madonna's very existence would be highly unlikely. With its Latin beat and gospel harmonies, "Lay Your Love All Over Me," one of ...

| | Glee Cast Glee: The Music, Vol. 2 CD (2009) Original Soundtrack
Singles '93-'03 album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual actors, but it's hard not to sing along with a song like "Jump," where the cast replaces Eddie Van Halen's keyboard riff with bright choral harmonies. ~ Andrew Leahey
The second Glee soundtrack feels a bit rushed, arriving no less than four weeks after Vol. 1's release ...

Singles '93-'03 songs
$8.79 To label (in any way) the self-titled debut from All About Eve "goth" is a perfect example of how loosely the term was being thrown around in the mid- to late '80s in England. Sure, the Eves had a bit of goth cred (touring with the Mission, early singles that sounded a lot like Siouxsie), but All About Eve is more folksy than menacing, and follows the tradition of later-era Fairport ...
| | Dotti Holmberg Sometimes Happy Times CD (2002)
Singles '93-'03 album
$15.39 Lee Mallory, Randy Swickard, Allison Buft (background vocals).
Recorded between 1966 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Dotti Holmberg.
Although Holmberg did not release solo recordings in the 1960s, she recorded fairly often in the studio and at home, yielding enough material to produce this 17-song mixture of 1966-1970 studio productions and home demos. Her Curt Boettcher association is what will probably draw a lot of collectors' attention to her work in the first place, though as it happens just four of these tracks (all from 1966) were produced by Boettcher. Those Boettcher cuts are, well, typical Boettcher: candy-sweet melodies and lyrics matched to multi-layered Baroque pop production, with Holmberg's vocals verging on the childlike (not always to good effect). Holmberg only wrote one of the Boettcher-overseen songs, but actually did pen most of the other songs, which project a flower-powery naïveté that can be both affecting and overdone in its fantasy-ridden rose-colored hue. If you're in the right mood, it's not bad stuff, as Holmberg has a decent knack for blending the merry and the melancholy in her melodies, and her voice does have a singularly high, keening, almost transparently trusting quality. The eight home demos, though far less sophisticated in their arrangements (mostly featuring just folky acoustic guitars and light percussion rattles), are in some aspects preferable to the studio ...
| | Steve Haines Beginner's Mind CD (2003)
Singles '93-'03 CD music
$12.59 Bassist Steve Haines is a well-kept secret -- or at least he had been up until the release of Beginner's Mind. Haines had been a session man for over a decade, and this is his debut. Recording with a fine group of peers in tenor saxophonist David Lown, Chip Crawford on piano, Rob Smith on trumpet, and drummer Tom Taylor, Haines weaves together a fairly magical set of originals and interpretations of standards. Haine's crew is sprightly in approach, whether they are exploring modalism as they do on "The North Shore," or an old gospel tune such as on Tim Young's arrangement of "Sometimes ...
