| | John Mayall Hard Road CD John Mayall Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Recorded between 1966 & 1968. Includes liner notes by John Mayall, Scott Schinder.
Following Eric Clapton's departure after the magnificent Bluesbreakers album, Mayall plugged the gap with Peter Green. Little did anyone know (except Green) that he would almost equal Clapton in the minds of fans and the cogniscenti. Two instrumentals on this collection, Freddie King's "The Stumble" and Green's "The Super-Natural", clearly demonstrate the clean sound of his Gibson Les Paul. The line-up is completed by bassist John McVie and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. Ex-commercial artist Mayall also designed and painted the cover, which itself is a fine piece of art-work and is probably rotting in some printer's basement, long forgotten. The remastered CD reissue is quite superb.
This is part of Universal's "Blues Classics" series.

Rolling Stone (12/7/68, p.28) - "...the best album ever put out by a white blues band....[Mayall's] singing is excellent....If there is a quality that really distinguishes this record, it's the presence of piano...it adds a rustic, very country blues-ish flavor to the songs..." John Mayall Hard Road Songs Hard Road Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) I am blown away typical of great bands the first impression only gets better with time. the jamming tracks with paul butterfield harmonica and mick fleetwood drumming, and peter green starting to show his brilliance with lyrics, singing and guitar will send shivers down your spine. john mayall's direction, his inimitable soft wailing blues voice and the fact that this was the source of british blues and fleetwood mac make this a collecors piece as well as one of the best blues collectors items i now own. The extras are great!
On the 1st CD is added the ethereal Evil Woman Blues from the old Raw Blues LP, which is followed by the four great tracks with Butterfield, gems all! The 2nd CD is out of this world, not a loser in the bunch. Green's vocals and guitar on Out Of Reach are masterful. In fact all of the Green sounds on the 2nd CD are great - Greeny, a nice cover of Otis Rush's Double Trouble and more. Green's sparse and haunting guitar on First Time Alone hints at what was to come with Albatross, Apostle, etc. Very highly recommended for fans of Peter Green. 1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't ...

Hard Road CD music
$15.95 Recorded live at the Atlanta Internation Pop Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, July 3 & 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Kirk West.
The 1970 Atlanta International Pop Festival was one of the first big rock festivals of the decade, beating out the Isle of Wight by over a month. It was also home turf for the Allman Brothers, who were invited to play the opening and closing sets of the three-day event. In retrospect, it's ...
| | Cream BBC Sessions CD (2003)
Hard Road music CDs
$12.65 Recorded for the BBC between 1966 and 1968, the 22 songs on this set find Cream at their most concise. Only two songs break the four-minute mark, which is striking for a trio that blazed a trail as an improvisational live act with all three members soloing furiously and at great length. Recorded live specifically for radio ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Hard Road songs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff ...

| | Ray Bonneville Roll It Down CD (2003)
Hard Road music CDs
$14.45 Roll It Down begins with a funky, roots rock-based "Tomorrow's Yesterday,", a song that immediately brings to mind the super-group Little Village featuring John Hiatt. The bassline is also more prominent here. "Under The Bridge" is another slow blues-oriented song that could draw comparisons to Robert Cray without the great blues guitar solo but with a credible backing keyboard. The relaxing nature of most of Ray Bonneville's work is ever-present through the baker's dozen of offerings, especially the bounce emanating from "July Sun." "You might know the way to go/If you ask a passing crow," he sings as Colin Linden helps out on mandolin. Most of the time the arrangements work but the title of the album gets the tracks off ...
