| | Gene Autry Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer & Other Christmas Classics CD Gene Autry Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Following on from an excellent Gene Autry Christmas collection on Columbia from ten years earlier, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Other Christmas Classics adds two tracks to that disc's 16 and furnishes a remastering that makes these tracks sound better than ever. Though Autry's known best in a holiday context for the title song, he recorded many more splendid songs during the period, all of them evincing his superb Hollywood swing. Autry's other additions to the repertoire of Christmas classics landed in 1950 ("Frosty the Snowman," then a new song) and 1952 ("The Night Before Christmas Song"). Since country & western audiences were notoriously sensitive, he stayed away from sacred classics, making this collection much more exciting and fun than the usual. Aside from the above, highlights include "He's a Chubby Little Fellow," "Here Comes Santa Claus," and his update of an earlier hit, "The Night Before Christmas (In Texas, That Is)." ~ John Bush
Released by Columbia/Legacy in 1994, A Gene Autry Christmas is an excellent overview of his holiday recordings for Columbia, featuring no less than 16 songs, including his classic "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "If it Doesn't Snow on Christmas Day," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Everyone's a Child at Christmas." Autry's recordings were almost always charming, and that quality was in ample display on his holiday albums. This disc does a terrific job of rounding up highlights from those many records; until the release in 2003 of a remastered collection (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Other Christmas Classics), A Gene Autry Christmas was the definitive Autry Christmas collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer & Other Christmas Classics album
$12.29 Topical folk like this ruled FM radio in the late '60s and early '70s, but today, Pat Humphries' odes to racial and sexual freedom and union organizing can sound pretty anachronistic. That's not to say there aren't some excellent songs on this CD, which features a preponderance of lilting originals, plus covers from the likes of Tom Pacheco, Mimi Farina, and Phil Ochs (whose previously unrecorded pro-labor anthem "Hands" opens the disc). Like such artists as Joan Baez, though, Humphries can come across as humorless and a bit preachy at times. This good album would have been better with a few light touches -- and a few less platitudes about freedom, justice, and love. ~ Jeff Burger
Miracles DO happen! Although singer-songwriter and musical activist Pat Humphries created a stir in the folk world with her first album, 1992's "Same Rain," it took nine years before the release of "Hands," its follow-up. Then, more than a year after "Hands'" January 2001 release, the CD suddenly spent three days as the best-selling CD for Amazon.com, the Internet's most frequented music store. What triggered the rush of sales was a feature on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" about Pat's composition, "Swimming to the Other Side," which first appeared on her debut and then in a re-recorded version (broadcast by NPR) on "Hands." This song of hope and determination had become, like Pat's "Common Thread" and "Never Turning Back," a ubiquitous folk anthem sung at peace and social justice rallies and demonstrations around the world and was translated into seven languages. Pat Humphries was no longer a secret in her homeland. No less an authority than Pete Seeger called Pat's songs "some of the best I've heard in 50 years," and the material on "Hands" validates Pete's praise. "No Sweat" and "Cold Cup of Water" respectively examine the plight of workers in Third World sweat shops and migrant workers here in the States. Social issues of gay and straight parenting are addressed in "I'll Be There" and "People Love"; women's rights are the subject of Pat's cover versions of "Bread & Roses" and "We Were There." Pat wrote "Bound for Freedom" for a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and bears the central message, ...
