Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Bob Dylan; Robbie Robertson (guitar); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Al Kooper (organ); Kenneth A. Recording information: Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, TN. Photographer: Jerry Schatzberg. If Highway 61 Revisited played as a garage rock record, the double album Blonde on Blonde inverted that sound, blending blues, country, rock, and folk into a wild, careening, and dense sound. Replacing the fiery Michael Bloomfield with the intense, weaving guitar of Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan led a group comprised of his touring band the Hawks and session musicians through his richest set of songs. Blonde on Blonde is an album of enormous depth, providing endless lyrical and musical revelations on each play. Leavening the edginess of Highway 61 with a sense of the absurd, Blonde on Blonde is comprised entirely of songs driven by inventive, surreal, and witty wordplay, not only on the rockers but also on winding, moving ballads like "Visions of Johanna," "Just Like a Woman," and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." Throughout the record, the music matches the inventiveness of the songs, filled with cutting guitar riffs, liquid organ riffs, crisp pianos, and even woozy brass bands ("Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"). It's the culmination of Dylan's electric rock & roll period -- he would never release a studio record that rocked this hard, or had such bizarre imagery, ever again. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Only a year after HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, Dylan miraculously topped himself with further epigrams of surrealistic poetry and emotional intrigue. The pressure of a punishing touring schedule and high public profile helped drive him to an unbelievable fit of creativity as he spontaneously scribbled these gems in his hotel rooms. We were spoiled with a double album, more Dylan music than we had previously heard, yet still destined to endure. BLONDE ON BLONDE surrounds the folk-rock bard with the likes of Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson, Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey, all seasoned musicians giving this album a relaxed confidence quite unlike the youthful energy of HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED. Decades later this album still rewards and surprises. A gigantic record in every sense. Blonde On Blonde Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) great album to get a peak at who this artist is At first, i complained to my friend that this album is boring and is too hyped, but just like with any form of art, if it hits you when you need it, then you are in awe. I can say without a doubt that this will lyrically and musically entertain you for years to come. An essential dylan album. In my opinion, some hilights are "Stuck..." "Absolutely Sweet Mariie" "Most likely You'll go your way and I'll go mine" and "Sad Eyed lady..." I'm not trying to sell dylan, but as far as a masterpiece, get this, put on your headphones, and listen...you may not like it the first time or you may love the first time, who knows, but it will stay with you Submitted by BoneBoy (NJ Deadhead) Was This Review Helpful? Dylan is God !!! Seriously nobody can touch this guy, if you don't get it...that's fine, but if you can appreciate his undeniable greatness then you have to own this album...EVERY SONG IS A MASTERPIECE!!! Submitted by coulter777 (Ottawa, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
learn how to sing um, not only are his older albums way deeper and better sounding (times are a changin, freewheelin) but at least he sang like a normal human being. in every song his ridiculously made up and forced lenghtening of every other word just absolutely kills any sense of emotion in this album. eeevery sooooong soooounds cooompleeeeeetely ruuuuuuined by his absurd voice. stick to political folk, bob. yes indeed, everybody must get stoned. heres mine to you. The Classic! Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde double album was - and still is - a masterpiece. Intense, funny and lyrical song writing like only Dylan can do. He gathered some of the best musicians around, and the recordings are high quality and shine on this SACD release. Submitted by helge (Oslo, Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
