Cesaria Evora's umpteenth album since being rediscovered in the late 1980s, VOZ D'AMOR is a return to the minimalism of the singer's Cape Verdean morna roots. This move is underlined by the inclusion of "Isolada," written by her late uncle, Francisco Xavier da Cruz, who, under the pseudonym B. Leza, was one of the most influential figures in Cape Verdean music. Accompanied by spare instrumentation, Evora's soft, dignified voice is all that's really needed to carry these songs, which encompass topics as diverse as love for her home island ("Nha Coracao Tchora"), ill-mannered young girls ("Saia Travada"), and stolen kisses ("Beijo Roubado").
"Jardim Prometido" appropriates the melody of the Brothers Four's '60s hit "Greenfields," as morna has expertly done with melodies and genres since Cape Verdeans first started singing, while the stately rhythms of "Mar De Canal" are reminiscent of Portuguese fado. VOZ D'AMOR is a beautiful collection of seemingly effortless musical and vocal virtuosity made all the more astonishing by its apparent simplicity.
VOZ D'AMOR won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.

Q (3/04, p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The intimate settings, generally given shape by delicate acoustic guitar and piano, allow Evora to infuse both uptempo set-pieces and nigh-on funereal blues with a dazzling intensity." Uncut (3/04, p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Perfect for baths, romantic dinners and dreaming about deserted islands in the sun." Voz D'Amor album
$11.99 This is a collection of Spanish and American songs by Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury and opera singer Montserrat Caballe.
With Barcelona, Queen singer Freddie Mercury realized his long-lived dream of performing with an opera singer; in this case, Montserrat Caballe. While it's certainly a treat for any fan of Mercury's to hear this album, it's a difficult record to recommend. Most fans of opera will probably find it far too simplistic and pop-based, while many rock fans are sure to find the record too classical. The first half of the album, however, is deserving of a spin for any open-minded listener. Consisting of semi-operatic melodies with grand production, songs like "Barcelona" and the Eastern-sounding "La Japonaise" are startling in their beauty; the two singers from opposite ends of the music spectrum working surprisingly well off each other. The most classically operatic pieces of the project, ...

| | Cesaria Evora Sao Vicente CD (2001)
Voz D'Amor songs
$7.59 SAO VICENTE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Cesaria Evora, who at times has been referred to as a new Edith Piaf, turns in another masterful album with her first release of the new millennium, Sao Vicente. This album features several first-rate guest appearances, including Pedro Guerra, Caetano Veloso, Chucho Valdes, and North American blues superstar Bonnie Raitt (who, as always, delivers a remarkable performance) but none takes the stage from Cesaria. This is an album which, even when sunny and jubilant, still has an underlying theme of boundless sorrow, but in the end, the music is pure joy to the ear and the spirit. Highlights of the album include the elegant, nostalgic and sweeping opener, "Sao Vicente Di Longe" (which is the title of the European version of the album). "Dor Di Amor" best illustrates how such joyful music, with jubilant beats and horns, can be so sad, with Cesaria's mournful laments decorating the uplifting song. The album includes more Latin-tinged songs, including "Tiempo Y Silencio" where she sings in Spanish, and nostalgic torch songs, such as "Linda Mimosa" and "Negue," which finds Cesaria accompanied solely by a piano, resulting in one of the most beautiful and touching performances on the album. As is always the case with this singer, the album is ...

$12.39 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard on four tracks, ...
