Purcell: O Solitude Classical Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)  Lesne has a style with Purcell that is extremely moving
This is one of the finest disks of Purcell's songs that I have ever heard -- perhaps THE finest. Not only the vocal performance, but the period instrument accompaniment as well is also absolutely second to none. It has the quality of viola da gamba but is actually a basse de violon, with clavecin and theorbe. Lesne is certainly one of the five greatest countertenors in the world today, the others of course being David Daniels, Andreas Scholl, Philippe Jaroussky, and Carlos Mena (apologies to the other greats whom I have forgotten for the moment). The great countertenors are all very distinct in their repertoires and voice quality, so one really cannot rank them: they are all number one in their realm, and that certainly goes for Lesne. But other than this disk, I have never heard him sing in English, and the non-native-speaker style of his enunciation is captivating beyond words. It takes one right back to the English Baroque, which was after all much inspired by French (not to mention Italian) music. This collection contains many of Purcell's greatest songs, with accompaniment that cannot be matched. It transports one right to the land of bliss, with no boring pit-stops along the way. Music for Violin Alone is the debut date as leader for virtuoso violinist Mark Feldman, who has performed as a sideman with countless musicians, in genres ranging from country to avant-garde jazz. Here he performs original, classically styled pieces that exude high drama. The violin arcs over small measures of time, plummets into hurt, soars back up into the air, then lands lightly spinning. Feldman bows out grit and texture with ribbed vibratos, and achieves excellent (and frequent) harmonies through a curious sawing technique. With glissando runs and compositional foils, Feldman balances tremolo highs with base harmonics, in a study of unsettled, driven, imploring violin. ~ Joslyn Layne
