Taking the first, electric side of Bringing It All Back Home to its logical conclusion, Bob Dylan hired a full rock & roll band, featuring guitarist Michael Bloomfield, for Highway 61 Revisited. Opening with the epic "Like a Rolling Stone," Highway 61 Revisited careens through nine songs that range from reflective folk-rock ("Desolation Row") and blues ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry") to flat-out garage rock ("Tombstone Blues," "From a Buick 6," "Highway 61 Revisited"). Dylan had not only changed his sound, but his persona, trading the folk troubadour for a streetwise, cynical hipster. Throughout the album, he embraces druggy, surreal imagery, which can either have a sense of menace or beauty, and the music reflects that, jumping between soothing melodies to hard, bluesy rock. And that is the most revolutionary thing about Highway 61 Revisited -- it proved that rock & roll needn't be collegiate and tame in order to be literate, poetic, and complex. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Though 1966's BLONDE ON BLONDE is usually singled out as the most innovative Bob Dylan album, its predecessor HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED is the one that definitively marks Dylan's transformation from progressive folk singer to visionary rock poet. It's Dylan's first fully electric album, powered by the manic intensity of Mike Bloomfield's skull-and-crossbones blues-rock guitar leads and Al Kooper's rich organ fills.
While many of the songs are presented in a traditional 12-bar blues format, the lyrics find Dylan finally abandoning conventional linear narrative in favor of poetic abstraction, surreal imagery, and biting sarcasm. In the rock world, there has never been a lambasting harsher or more cathartic than the excoriation of "Ballad of a Thin Man," and no challenge more bold than that offered in the iconic "Like a Rolling Stone." When Dylan invokes the names of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot towards the end of the poetic epic "Desolation Row," he's not just name-dropping; he's merely delineating the company in which a work as rich and ground-breaking as HIGHWAY 61 belongs.

Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.88) - Ranked #4 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...One of those albums that, quite simply, changed everything..."
Q (7/01, p.45) - "...Dylan is in stinging form..."
Q (Magazine) (p.110) - "[A] dizzying rush of moody disquiet, surreal imagery and freakshow characters culminate in the mighty 'Desolation Row.'"
NME (Magazine) (10/2/93, p.29) - Ranked #14 in NME's list of the "Greatest Albums Of All Time."
**Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid**

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

5 stars Still astouding after all these years...
It's still amazing how good this guy was--this came out while the Beatles were still a "boy band" and holds up to this day. Hard to believe he put out this, "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Blonde on Blonde" (double) all within two years. If you're reading this, you know how good this album is -- spring for it! I don't have an SACD player (yet) but even on my regular CD player the remastering adds crispness and definition. Would have preferred a standard jewel case over this Digipak, but those are the breaks.

5 stars the definitive Bob Dylan lp
Bob Dylan has taken rock n' roll to the next level and has song writing, especially in a rock genre, to a much higher level. No more "Johnny lost his girl and he's so sad" lyrics. Dylan has meshed humor, sarcasm, insight, and poetic license into the most rocking sounds yet produced on record.

The Indigo Girls may still be the soft, folky females that tough rocker dudes love to mock, but the pair's 11th studio album serves to remind that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been making surprisingly consistent albums packed with sharp songwriting and performances for a remarkably long time. In fact, DESPITE OUR DIFFERENCES ranks among the duo's finest offerings.
The album is packed with meticulously crafted tunes long on memorable melodies, impeccably tight harmonies, and moving lyrics (see the nakedly emotive "I Believe in Love"). Producer Mitchell Froom gives the album a distinctively breezy and shimmery feel, and while country inflections underpin many of the tunes, there are equal measures of pop and straight-ahead folk in the mix. Let the rock dudes keep sneering: with DESPITE OUR DIFFERENCE the Indigo Girls continue to develop and hone their delicate, organic sound.
The Indigo Girls move to Hollywood Records -- home of Los Lobos among others -- and do what they do best, but add some new shades and textures as well. For starters, there are no anthemic political statements here, unless you are willing to regard to the truly personal as political (an admirable stance in this crazy world). Secondly, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray really concentrate on hooks on Despite Our Differences. What the record reflects, with its gorgeous blend of acoustic guitars, slippery snare drums and cymbals, and the painterly use of electric guitars and keyboards, is a relaxed, moving, and utterly poetic offering. For many, the Indigo Girls have become a fixture, much like R.E.M., whose albums would come out year by year and blur into one another. It wasn't a rut so much as an attempt to do what they patented ...
