After his sophomore album, POSES, sailed critically but failed commercially, Rufus Wainwright fell into a pattern of hard drug abuse. Luckily, the support of friends and family landed him in rehab. Emerging newly sober and clearheaded, Rufus threw himself into his work. The result is WANT ONE, an unabashedly honest, musically sprawling record that finds the vocalist reaching a new level of maturity.
It becomes quite clear during the borderline satirical album opener "Oh, What a World" (which goes so far as to reference Ravel's "Bolero") that Wainwright has met his musical match in producer Marius de Vries (U2, Bjork). Rather than reigning in the singer/multi-instrumentalist's vision, de Vries understands that the sincerity and conviction in his voice keeps even the most over-the-top of tracks grounded. Standout moments include the epic "Go or Go Ahead," "14th Street," and the stunningly candid "Dinner at Eight." WANT ONE is the work of an artist who is, above all, determined to live life to the fullest.

Rufus Wainwright Want One Songs Want One Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews pure genius i will make it simple - this album is worth buying just for the song "dinner at eight," which may well be the most ridiculously over poweringly emotional song of all time, especially if you understand what it is about. Rufus is a genius and probably always will be. It doesnt bother me that his music isnt very popular because it makes it so much more personal to his fans Submitted by mj (manc, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

This is the real deal! I am fortunate enough to have seen Rufus live, just him with his piano and guitar and he was AMAZING!He played several songs from this album and it is great to hear the full band versions. His voice is honest and powerful, his songwriting masterful and entertaining. The best songs are OH WHAT A WORLD,I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS,MOVIES OF MYSELF,14th STREET and 11:11 but the more obscure tracks like GO ON GO AHEAD are truly groundbreaking. This whole album is excellent and should be a modern classic. If you can,see him live. You won't be dissapointed! This man is a genius. Rufus has the best voice I've ever heard, not to mention his ability to write absolutely beautiful lyrics and music. "Want One" is so far my favorite album. Someone please explain to me why isn't he the biggest thing on this planet yet? Submitted by irith (Philadelphia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Third Experience is quite the charm rufus wainwright is rather young yet so mature for his songwriting, instrumentation, n vocal dynamics. when i first heard rufus on my local radio station, i was intrigued with his romantic voice. the song was april fools. since then, i have listened to rufus repeatedly. i own all the albums, on tape that is. ok the songs now. go or go ahead is probably my favourite track on want one. the atmospheric, ethereal sounds cascade like a falling waterfall. when the chorus intervenes, it is quite similar to Queen with its symphonic chamber pop orchestration. it's such a powerful song. also, the first couple of tracks introduce us to a more sober n lucid rufus. of these songs, i prefer i don't know what it is n vicious world. his lyrics defy his young age just as john mayer or fiona apple accentuates theirs. my second favourite song is want one. you don't need to be informed what rufus desires. it's understated n quite transcendent. overall, rufus is an emerging pop star whether he complies with it or not. so go or go ahead n invest in some intelligent pop courtesy of mr rufus wainwright. | | Arthur Russell First Thought Best Thought CDs (2006)
Want One
$19.95 The reissue campaign of his work began with Philip Glass' Point Music label, which assembled a fine compilation of unreleased material, as well as the original take of "Another Thought" in 1994. The 21st century has been even kinder: English label Soul Jazz released most -- though not all -- of the singles on The World of Arthur Russell, and this label, Audika, has released both World of Echo -- a legendary cult album that featured Russell's voice and cello -- and Calling Out of Context, a collection of unreleased tunes. First Thought Best Thought is a double-disc set that brings together, for the first time, both sets of his Instrumentals compositions. Instrumentals, Vol. 2 was issued in 1984 on the Belgian label Les Disques Du Crepescule. Russell got test pressings of Instrumentals, Vol. 1 (which make up the first ten cuts on disc one) but for some inexplicable reason (he had one, to be sure, but no one else, including Steve Knutson of Audika, knows what it was) it was never issued until now.
