The 2003 Mighty Sound edition of SHORT SHARP SHOCKED includes a bonus CD containing 22 unreleased tracks, live recordings, rare radio sessions and studio outtakes.
Her first and best album--not including the self-released THE TEXAS CAMPFIRE TAPES--1988's SHORT SHARP SHOCKED surprised many on its release. The TEXAS CAMPFIRE TAPES was a deliberate bid for folky authenticity, right down to the poor recording quality and copious background noise, but for her major-label debut, Michelle Shocked went to Nashville to record a fairly slick folk-pop record with noted country hitmaker Pete Anderson.
Not at all unlike K.D. Lang's early albums--or Carole King's TAPESTRY, for that matter--these 11 tracks, including a mild rock version of the first album's "Fogtown" and a cover of folk great Jean Ritchie's "The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore," are unabashedly commercial. Shocked was rewarded with a minor hit single, the winsome and catchy "Anchorage," but folk purists never took her seriously again.

After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. Michelle Shocked is nothing if not a roots-conscious artist. She initially made her name as a hard-traveling neo-folk troubadour a la Woody Guthrie, early Bob Dylan, et al. After her mainstream breakthrough with the relatively pop-oriented CAPTAIN SWING, she used her newfound celebrity to further explore her roots on the follow-up, ARKANSAS TRAVELER. The 1992 album is essentially an Americana sampler, wherein Shocked teams up with different rootsy artists on each cut. Bluegrass is a heavy influence, and she's joined variously by Doc Watson, Alison Krauss, and other bluegrass greats. On other cuts, she partners with everyone from the Band to Taj Mahal.
