| | Christmas In The Mountains CD
While balladeers often celebrate the winter holiday by singing of crowded city sidewalks and decorated storefront windows, country folks celebrate by singing of quieter seasonal pleasures. Christmas in the Mountains collects 14 songs from bluegrass favorites, including Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and the Country Gentlemen. While contemporary singers rock around a synthetic Christmas tree, these old-fashioned performers seek comfort in home, family, and traditional values. Sparks offers an extra-sad version of "Blue Christmas" that's adorned by Tommy Boyd's dobro, while the Wildwood Valley Boys sing of "Christmas in Caroline." There are a couple of classics, "Christmas Time Back Home" and "Silent Night," by the Country Gentlemen, and a spruced-up "Christmas in Virginia" by the the Lost & Found. No Yuletide collection would be complete without a couple of tearjerkers and they are provided here by Tommy Edwards on "The Christmas Letter" and Paul Williams on "I Can't Go Home This Christmas." Over and over, Christmas in the Mountains rejoices in spending time with loved ones and the quiet solitude of winter in the mountains. For those who complain that the winter holiday has become too commercial and that no one remembers the real reason for the season, Christmas in the Mountains will serve as a fitting antidote. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Christmas In The Mountains album
$13.49 The second installment of the Hard to Find 45's series is, like the first, a wide assortment of Top 40 hits, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. Whereas the first volume was devoted to material from 1955-1960, this goes into the next era (1961-1964), and though it's pretty pop-inclined, there's a good deal of diversity. There's doo wop verging on soul by the Stereos ("I Really Do Love You," the Flares' "Foot Stompin'," Clyde McPhatter's "Lover Please"), girl-sung teen idol pop (Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him," Marcie Blane's "Bobby's Girl"), the poppiest brand of girl group sounds (the Murmaids' "Popsicles and Icicles," Diane Renay's "Navy Blue," the Caravelles' "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry"), the foreign novelty (Singing Nun's ...

$16.59 This extraordinary collaboration between former Swell Maps guitarist/vocalist Nikki Sudden and Birthday Party/Crime & the City Solution guitarist/vocalist Rowland Howard comes highly recommended to those following the post-punk axis that spawned Nick Cave, These Immortal Souls, and the Wreckery. The pair first worked together on Sudden's solo album, Texas, which was also released on Creation and featured brilliant performances from Howard in his trademark knife-edge blues guitar. Further collaboration seemed inevitable, as the duo incidentally shared many connections in the post-Birthday Party scene. Rowland Howard frequently worked with the late Epic Soundtracks in Crime & the City Solution and later in These Immortal Souls. The legendary drummer and vocalist was Nikki Sudden's brother and a key figure in the urban blues sound that grew out of the splitting of both the Birthday Party and Swell Maps. Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc is an outstanding opus derived of the duo's shared love for the crafts of Alex Chilton and Big Star in their darker moments, Lee Hazlewood, Serge Gainsbourg, sinister country, and Delta blues. The reissue version contains the original album, which at the time of release in 1987 was a dark surprise from the post-punk underground. The album set the precedent ...
