This is Louis Bellson's collaboration with Billy Cobham. Some of the material here was performed live and released as a video. The arrangements are likable, but the obvious intent here is to amaze and delight those enamored with virtuosic drumming. The duels between Cobham and Bellson are intense and demonstrate their differences in technique. Cobham's approach is sheer power based on instinct, while Bellson's is more carefully planned and played with flawless precision. The two separate solos are both excellent, and Bellson seemed to be even more inspired than usual. This is moderately recommended for jazz fans, but should be required listening for all drummers. ~ Robert Taylor

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Matterhorn CD music
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." ...
| | Chris Potter Lift: Live At The Village Vanguard CD (2004)
Matterhorn music CDs
$13.75 Chris Potter's new Live at the Village Vanguard album starts jarringly enough. There is a particular knotty, unaccompanied solo saxophone intro to drummer Bill Stewart's "7.5" played via tape delay by Potter on seemingly three saxophones. He is joined by a series of freaky tones on Kevin Hays' Fender Rhodes playing what sounds like the keys on a telephone keypad to truly disorienting effect. Soon enough, however, the ensemble kicks in to fill out the rhythm, Hays switches to piano, and Potter brings the tune's melodic body into focus, swinging half-in-half-out, tightrope walking around a series of scalar figures that translate it into a wonderfully energetic ride. And this is merely the statement of purpose for the entire gig. On the original material, Potter's now truly unique voice on the tenor may have been influenced in equal parts by Dewey Redman, John Coltrane, and even Sonny Rollins, but his manner of phrasing and his distinct tone make him ...
| | Charles Earland Funk Fantastique CD (2004)
Matterhorn songs
$12.35 Although Funk Fantastique is a somewhat thrown-together affair, the music presented on the album represents solid work by organist/keyboardist Charles Earland and company. The material at the center of the album (tracks four through seven) was originally released as Charles III in 1972, and the surrounding tracks are previously unreleased. Since the unreleased material comes from two different sessions, three different ensembles grace Funk Fantastique. The presence of singer Joe Lee Wilson on the dated "Auburn Delight" (think cheesy '70s jazz) offers even more variety. Through it all, though, Earland's funky organ and keyboard brings all the material together under the banner of soul-jazz. Even on an unsuccessful ...

| | Raymond Jones Intimate CD (2001)
Matterhorn CD music
$14.79 Smooth and sultry keyboardist Raymond Jones continues to perfect his craft -- a style of smooth jazz he defines as "soul jazz" or "sensual jazz" -- on Intimate, one in a series of his releases on UEG Records. Though Jones writes most of the album's songs, he collaborates with guest vocalists and musicians: vocalists Norma Jean Wright, Eric Gable, Lori Perry, Alexx Daye, and Zachary; musicians Art Webb, Leslie Drayton, Stephen Baxter, Fernando Harkless, and Andre Roberson. In addition, bassist Del Atkins, guitarist Fred Clark, and drummer Tony Moore perform throughout the album alongside Jones, who generally plays keyboards. As mentioned earlier, Jones continues to perfect his craft on Intimate. Past albums featured a similar mood and pace, and past songs featured similar lyrics and vocals; however, never has Jones' music sounded this calculated and honed. A considerable improvement, Intimate should impress anyone who enjoyed Jones' earlier releases. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Composer, producer, pianist Raymond Jones releases his third CD, INTIMATE on uegmusic.com. The twelve compositions take the listener to romantic musical spaces and beyond. Incorporating a mix of jazz, Latin and R&B elements, INTIMATE is a complete work featuring insightful lyrics and contemporary rhythms. Highlights include the strings and piano of the first track INTIMACY, which give the listener a sense of soaring with the pianist as he expands on his improvised motifs until one feels the notes just fly away. This leads into the sexually charged BAD FOR ME sung by Lori Perry. The composition speaks of intimate moments with someone who feels good to be with but in the overall picture is not the right one (beyond brief moments of ecstasy). DANCE features Norma Jean Wright letting loose on a (modified) blues piece about seeing an old friend at a party and wanting to dance. But there is a wife involved and it could make things difficult if not explained. DESTINY features Raymond playing piano with a slow build, which reaches its climax in the last choruses of the song. All that is missing is a bottle of good wine and a fireplace. ALL I NEED features Ms Alexx Daye in a romantic mood as well. The song describes ...
