Once upon a time, jazz players like saxophonist Red Holloway went out of fashion whenever their style of choice -- bop, soul jazz -- made way for the latest trend. Luckily since the 1980s, a plethora of styles co-exist, each with its own labels and venues. Coast to Coast was recorded on Milestone and finds the seasoned saxophonist in exuberant form. It doesn't hurt that he's joined by tenor Frank Wess, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, drummer Paul Humphrey, and guitarist Melvin Sparks. The quintet wasted little time in the studio, laying down eight soulful tracks over a two-day period in February 2003. There's an easy give and take between the players, leading to lively exchanges and stirring solo work. Both Smith and Sparks give Gene Gray's "Good to Go" the feel of classic soul jazz, while Holloway's smooth lead adds icing to this musical cake. The motto for this whole affair would probably be the opener, a Holloway original titled "Still Groovin'." Holloway jumps out of the gate with a high-flying solo as if to show that as far as his chops are concerned, not much has changed. Unfortunately, there is only one of his trademark blues vocals, "Million Dollar Secret," a song that advises young girls on what type of man to choose. Holloway fans and anyone who enjoys good soul jazz will want to pick up a copy of Coast to Coast. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Coast To Coast album

Coast To Coast CD music
$14.59 NEW YORK NEW SOUND was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
This star-studded party led by long-revered Gerald Wilson reads like a roll call of jazz history past and present. Something of a great-grandfather to the tradition, Wilson has worked as a composer, arranger, and trumpeter for the likes of Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Nancy Wilson, and Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few. Here Wilson is joined by ...

Coast To Coast CD music
$9.89 IN THE STUDIO AND IN CONCERT contains the two previously released albums REUNION (1988) and IN CONCERT TOKYO (1989) in one 2-disc package.
Includes liner notes by Chris Albertson and Jonathan Schwartz.
Recorded live at Kan-i Hoken Hall, Tokyo, Japan in December 1988. Originally released on Concord (4382).
This posthumous reissue combines 1988's Reunion and 1989's In Concert Tokyo in a single two-disc package. The two Concord albums marked Mel Torme's first collaboration with arranger Marty Paich and his "Dek-tette" since 1957. In his mid-sixties at the time of the recordings, Torme sounds incredibly robust and inventive. The ten-piece band is just the right touch -- small enough to swing with intimacy and economy, big enough to color a ballad with regal textures. Torme may be thought of as the quintessential old-fashioned crooner, but here he puts his successful spin on some excellent modern material, including Chick Corea's "Spain" (with lyrics by Al Jarreau), as well as "Walk Between the Raindrops" and "The Goodbye Look," two tracks from Donald Fagen's The Nightfly. Paich's electric piano on many of the tracks ...
