Recorded live at the Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California on May 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.
While there's certainly no shortage of posthumous Jimi Hendrix concert recordings running the gamut in terms of quality, this one is something special. It captures Hendrix in a period of transition. He was ready to start a new chapter, having no way of knowing he'd be dead in a matter of months. After his Band of Gypsys phase, he had decided to reunite the original Experience, but bassist Noel Redding declined, perhaps convinced that his band, Fat Mattress, was bound for glory. Consequently, the visceral R&B of the Gypsys mixed with the fluid open-endedness of the Experience through the combination of Mitch Mitchell and drummer Billy Cox.
On this night in Berkeley in 1970, the trio was on fire, roaring through "old" chestnuts ("Hey Joe," "Purple Haze") invested with new life, and pushing the boundaries with works-in-progress (embryonic versions of what would become "Straight Ahead" and "New Rising Sun"). It's interesting to note that while Hendrix's gut-wrenching solos on the evening's second set were among his most expressive, the song list tended toward the more blues-based numbers rather than the psychedelic masterpieces he'd been concocting in the studio. It's as fascinating to hear him make his way through the thickets where composition and improvisation meet, as it is tragic that we'll never know where he would have emerged at the other end of his journey.
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Billy Cox (bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums).
Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott.

Its good to finally hear the second show at Berkley in its entirity. This is an awesome album! Its got an early version of "Rising Sun" and a sweet version of "Star Spangled Banner". Billy Cox's bass playing on this cd is amazing too. They end the set with a 10 minute version of "Voodoo Chile". Hendrix refers to it as "the anthem of the people." Oh yeah.... Jimi at his best! Forget about all of the other live Jimi discs out there (with the exception of the Band of Gypsys releases) because this is the one to buy. Submitted by a reviewer (Connecticut) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Must If you like Jimi, or if you like guitar this is a must. The version of voodoo child, one of my favorite song, is incredible. I hope that one day soon they will issue the music found on some tapes that were given by Jim to Noel Redding and that were recently rediscovered. Along the same thought I wish that the studio tapes made one night way back in the past can be found. It was a jam session with Jimi, John McLaughlin and Dave Holland. Mr. Holland at least twice in interview refered to that jam session and mentionned that the tapes were rolling. I sure would like to hear that music. Jimi Plays Berkeley: The Second Set songs
$16.65 1966's Volume 3 was the last album the Easybeats recorded in Australia before heading to England in hopes of conquering the pop world; by this time they were firmly established as Australia's most popular group, and while Volume 3 doesn't quite sound like a band going through the motions, it also suggests they'd accomplished as much as they were likely to with producer Ted Albert and the songwriting team of Little Stevie Wright and George Young. (Significantly, Harry Vanda would come into the forefront as Young's songwriting partner on their next album, Friday on My Mind). But if Volume 3 doesn't capture the Easybeats at their very best, it hardly disappoints; opening with the tough, R&B flavored "Sorry," the ...
