One of the greatest voices in country music today and reigning CMA female vocalist of the year shines on this, her sixth album. McBride's previous catalog of music has always been intelligent and full of emotion, and these 12 tracks are decidedly no different. True to womanhood, Martina embodies the spirit of being female in every role. McBride sings about a bride-to-be in the guitar-strumming "Wearing White," as a daughter in the gospel-infused bluegrass "Reluctant Daughter," as a mom in the affecting ballad "In My Daughter's Eyes," as a confident lover in the smooth and gentle "When You Love Me," and as a friend in the soft, midtempo "She's a Butterfly." Other standouts include a delicious reinterpretation of "Over the Rainbow" as only McBride could sing it and the dramatic "How Far" in the style of her 1997 hit, "Whatever You Say." In a lush career that now spans ten years, Martina McBride always has something new to offer with immeasurable artistry. ~ Maria Konicki Dinoia The sound of mainstream contemporary country hits you square in the face with no apologies on MARTINA. As on her earlier, massively successful albums, Nashville belter Martina McBride (you thought maybe the title referred to the tennis player?) continues in the style that garnered her a huge audience in the second half of the 1990s. The album is full of gently anthemic pop/country songs sporting simple lyrics full of positive messages. "She's a Butterfly," for example, sounds like it could have been the alternate theme for DAWSON'S CREEK, and the forthright "City of Love" seems tailor-made for an urban-renewal campaign commercial. Not that McBride doesn't speak directly to her audience--it's hard to get more direct than a shout-out like "this is for all you girls about 25" (from "ThRolling Stone (1/22/04, p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...One of country's finest voices [and] one of its biggest risk-takers..." | | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Martina
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron Wood, with another song, the Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra duet "Summer Wine," featuring Bono. Some of this is not unfamiliar to the Corrs' repertoire, since they did cover "Little Wing" before, on Talk on ...

Martina
$16.45 "We must keep in mind the peculiarity of Swinney. He is similiar only to himself and his voice is the absolute owner of the stage. One does not get close by chance to works such as this." -Franco Ratti, Buscadero Magazine, Italy"Cary is one of those rare singer-songwriters who has no obvious influences and seems to have cut a unique path. His style is bare bones. It's honest, cryptic and sort of haunting. Think unique...think ...

| | Dick Curless Tombstone Every Mile CD (1973)
Martina
$10.79 Personnel: Dick Curless (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Author: Rich Kienzel. Arranger: Dick Curless. Anchored by the number five country hit title track, Dick Curless' first album for Tower also included his Top 20 country follow-up, "Six Times a Day (The Trains Came Down)," which like "Tombstone Every Mile" was written by Dan Fulkerson. The trucker disaster song "A Tombstone Every Mile" might be what Curless is best known for, but this LP isn't built around trucking songs, as were the albums of the time by Red Simpson (who covered "A Tombstone Every Mile," as it happens). Instead, it's a fairly versatile, hard to categorize set of an enjoyable journeyman who mixed country-pop with a folksy all-around entertainer approach. Curless can sound a little like (or, at least, certainly influenced by) Johnny Cash on the more hard-charging numbers, yet the way his voice is apt to lapse into a low, slightly hammy bass vibrato puts a nod in the direction of Tennessee Ernie Ford as well. Covers of some familiar narrative-style songs ("Streets of Laredo," "King of the Road," "Nine Pound Hammer") fill out an album with just three Curless originals, with some of the tracks so under-produced they almost sound like demos for final versions with additional instrumentation, though they don't suffer for their simplicity. ~ Richie Unterberger When Dick Curless' truck-driving hit "Tombstone Every Mile" became a national hit in 1965, few knew that the singer was from Maine and had been banging around on small regional labels for the previous 15 years. This album, recently reissued with beautiful sound by those amazing music freaks at Sundazed, contains the original album, which in addition to the hit also includes great versions of "Streets of Laredo," "King of the Road," and "Nine Pound Hammer." There are credible versions of Johnny Horton's ...
