| | Shinedown Sound Of Madness CD (2008)
Hallucinations
$15.65 On its third studio outing, THE SOUND OF MADNESS, the post-grunge group Shinedown offers up another set of dramatic heavy rock. Easily the Floridian band's most dynamic album, MADNESS features both fierce, metallic tracks ("Devour," "Sin with a Grin") and surprisingly tender moments (the sensitive ballad "If You Only Knew"), with each tune emphasizing singer Brent Smith's powerful Chris Cornell-like vocals. Those expecting a dash of insanity from Shinedown's third album, The Sound of Madness, will have their hopes crushed, but chances are that fans of the Jacksonville-based active rock band not only don't expect madness, they'd recoil if that's what the quartet offered. Few bands have embraced convention quite as enthusiastically as Shinedown, who play every post-grunge cliché as if it were dogma, something never to be questioned or debated, something that is incontrovertible fact set in stone. They doggedly hit every mark -- winding up their guitar riffs with thin, flattened ...

| | Our Lady Peace Burn Burn Burn CDs (2009) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Digipak; Deluxe Edition
Hallucinations
$15.79 Personnel: Raine Maida (vocals); Steve Mazur (guitars); Duncan Coutts (bass instrument); Jeremy Taggart (drums). Audio Mixer: Andrew Scheps. The major thing to happen to Our Lady Peace since the 2005 release of HEALTHY IN PARANOID TIMES, is the public embrace of David Cook, winner of the 2008 American Idol. Cook often called OLP his favorite band, enlisting the band's Raine Maida to co-write three songs on his debut, a development that could theoretically lead to a bigger audience for the Canadian post-grunge band, something that the band appears to have kept in mind for their 2009 album BURN BURN if its streamlined sound is any indication. For all intents and purposes, is another Our Lady Peace album, still sounding like a hybrid of JOSHUA TREE-era U2 and latter-day Goo Goo Dolls, but the quirks, including the political indication of HEALTH, is toned down in favor for a gleaming adult-alternative sound. Because OLP are a rock band first and foremost, the slower moments are anthemic not sappy and the fist-pumping rockers are infused with righteousness, with the two extremes tied together with an spaciness that splits the difference between U2 and Coldplay. The major thing to happen to Our Lady Peace since the ...

Hallucinations
$7.96 The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Ernie Watts (saxophone); Ian Stewart (keyboards). Recorded live in New York, New York in 1981. Personnel: Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Ian Stewart (piano); Ian McLagan (keyboards); Charlie Watts (drums). Audio Mixer: Bob Clearmountain. Audio Remasterers: Stephen Marcussen; Stewart Whitmore. Photographer: Ken Regan. Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, it isn't nearly enough grit to make it rock as hard as Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! or even Love You Live, depressingly enough. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases ...

Even back in 1991/1992, fans, geeks, and critics found it irresistible to compare Pavement to Nirvana, the underground band that made the concessions to the mainstreams and reaped the rewards, expecting the group that remained doggedly underground to make a rush for the charts, even if it really never made sense, especially when you became acquainted with their debut. Ten years later, give or take a month, each group has a reissue in the store -- one with one track to bait collectors to buy 13 songs they already have, the other with B-sides, EPs, Peel sessions, unreleased sessions, and a full live concert, plus a 50-page booklet, all presented as enhancements to a seminal 14-track album. Generous really isn't the word for this lavish reissue of Pavement's first album, dubbed as Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe -- it offers an embarrassment of riches, with each new song proving that the band really was not just the best of its kind, but the best of its time. A heady statement, to be sure, but few classic albums would have their status bolstered the way that Slanted & Enchanted does here, with 34 (!) bonus tracks, enhancing an already legendary album in ways that are giddily revelatory. Those that trawl file-sharing services or trade CD-Rs might find ...
