Though the title reads White Lightning, this is actually a CD reissue of Vincent's 1970 comeback LP for Dandelion, I'm Back and I'm Proud, with the addition of four tracks from a 1971 BBC session. Was this particular comeback record something to be proud of? Not really. Recorded in 1969 for famed British DJ John Peel's Dandelion label and released the following year, it did feature some notables of the late-'60s Hollywood rock scene, including Skip Battin of the Byrds (on bass), Red Rhodes (on Dobro), Mars Bonfire (rhythm guitar), Jim Gordon (drums), and Linda Ronstadt (backing vocals), with Kim Fowley producing. But there was something of a rehash feel about the whole enterprise, which was short on new quality original material and heavy on reworkings of oldies like George Jones's "White Lightning," Dion/the Drifters' "Ruby Baby," and Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin." There were also remakes of Vincent's own '50s hits "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "Lotta Lovin'" that couldn't hope to displace the originals. The heavier late-'60s rock feel of the arrangements doesn't jibe well with Vincent's style, though some cuts boast a countrified touch (particularly the ones featuring Rhodes), and Vincent himself often sounds a little shaky and nervous on the vocals. The BBC session was done just a few days before his death, and rather surprisingly it's not bad. It's not terribly interesting, true, combining versions of his oldies "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "Say Mama" with covers of "Roll Over Beethoven" and Jim Reeves' country hit "Distant Drums." But in comparison to I'm Back and I'm Proud, it sounds honest, unforced, and energetic. ~ Richie Unterberger

| White Lightning Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Gene Vincent: "I`m Back And Iīm Proud" Recorded during a week in August, 1969, the recording of Geneīs comeback album at first didnīt went well despite famous people like Jim Morrison (of The Doors) and little Michael Jackson was invited. It was obvious something had to be done and Gene Vincentīs original guitar players Cliff Gallup or Johnny Meeks was asked for. Gene didnīt know how to find Gallup (he had actually not seen him since his October 1956-session, and would never see for the rest of his life), but Meeks was hired for the session and it all resulted in an great, up-dated album.
This CD is a must for all Vincent fans for these 12 songs alone but then we have the added bonus of four songs recorded by Gene in Britain on October, 1st 1971 (remember, Gene died on October, 12th 1971). Of the four bonus tracks, "Distant Drums" is a real gem. What a great recording it would have been had he cut it for Kama Sutra in 1970 (which is said he intended to do for his "The Day The World Turned Blue" album). Now this is what is left for us to enjoy. True to himself, Gene changed the lyric to suit him and weīll hear him sing "Marcia, Marcia, Marry Me" instead of "Mary, Mary Me".The sad truth is that wen Gene got back to the States a few days later he found his apartment empty. Marcia was gone, and so was his money, most of his furniture and even his record player. And Gene just kept drinking around the clock until he was was almost dead. And then it was too late. He agreed finally to let his parents get him to a hospital but there he died one hour later. Submitted by ake.roos (Ostersund, Swede,) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

White Lightning music CDs
$9.95 There's no question that Chicago's Baby Teeth draw heavily and heartily from the classic rock and power pop of the 1970s. It can be trickier to say whether the results constitute jokey pastiche or sincere homage, but that confusion seems entirely appropriate -- and the distinction almost irrelevant -- when you consider that the '70s were an era when playfulness and emotional earnestness coexisted in rock music far more easily than they typically do today. (Take, for instance, the work of the Todd Rundgren, Electric Light Orchestra, and Meat Loaf with Jim Steinman, all of whose influence is readily evident here.) So, when "Big Schools" opens the album with an anthemic rock flourish and a picturesque, writerly evocation of Classic American Collegiate Romance (frat party, freshman year, "...your friend's boyfriend was working the door..."), it feels somehow insincere; a pat, too-perfect mimicry of Springsteen's nostalgia-fueled narratives (or maybe more precisely the second-degree nostalgia of the Hold Steady -- in the songwriting blog project which generated much of this album's material, front Tooth Abraham Levitan acknowledged the song's debt to their "Stuck Between Stations.") But as its story arc develops into a sort of stock mini-epic, ...
