Compared to their debut release, See Forever Eyes is of the same caliber, with more attention given to keyboardist John Hall and less appointed to the band's guitar players. One of Prism's best songs appears here in "Take Me Away," which became a Top 30 hit in their homeland. Bruce Fairbairn has Prism playing to a cleaner, crisper sound, utilizing the color and sheen of the synthesizers in place of harder guitar riffs, working well in some places and failing in others. "Take Me Away" does deserve its chart notoriety, making the best of Mitchell's sharp hooks and Tabak's floating vocals. The song was written by Allen Harlow, who wasn't part of Prism when he introduced it to them, but was added to the lineup after the band rehearsed the song in the studio. "Flyin" takes full advantage of the keyboards' piping energy better than any of the album's tracks, and "See Forever Eyes" is a solid hard rock tune with a crystallized grittiness. Bland fillers like "N-N-N-No," "Just Like Me," and "Crime Wave" are easy to pass over, lacking the creativity or the spark given to some of the other songs. A little flashier and more pop sounding, See Forever Eyes continues the group's sound from their first release, with greater magnitude and dimension coming from the instruments. ~ Mike DeGagne

See Forever Eyes album
$10.49 Prism's ARMAGEDDON features "Jealously," "Virginia," and six other Bruce Fairburn produced tracks.
Armageddon is by far Prism's best album, with the band sounding faultless through all of the eight tracks. The songwriting is sharp and thoughtful, there's an even amount of guitar and keyboard interplay, and, on the whole, the album sports a sturdy, mature feel. More importantly, Bruce Fairbairn manages to elevate the band slightly above the arena rock norm, even ...

| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
See Forever Eyes music CDs
$10.45 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night parties and wild young women in tight dresses. Starz's lyrics, as a rule, were meant to be fun, not profound, and while Violation didn't go down in history as one of pop-metal's all-time classics, it's worth hearing if you're a fan of the style. ~ ...
| | Starz Attention Shoppers CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
See Forever Eyes songs
$10.59 Arguably, pop-metal is a form of power pop, or, at the very least, the two have some things in common. Like the Raspberries, the Go-Go's, or Blondie, a pop-metal act will typically blend rockin', guitar-powered aggression with pop sensibilities. Cheap Trick and Sweet, in fact, are perfect examples of bands that are relevant to both pop-metal and power pop. So it seemed logical when Starz provided a big dose of outright power pop on its third album, Attention Shoppers!. The band didn't eliminate the pop-metal factor on this 1978 LP; "X-Ray Spex" and "Good Ale We Seek," for example, are the type of pop-minded hard rock items that one expected from Starz. But tunes like "I'll Be There," "She" (not to be confused with the Kiss favorite), and "Hold on to the Night" are power pop ditties that wouldn't have been out of place at a Raspberries session; this isn't to say that Attention Shoppers! is in a class with the Raspberries' best work. Starz's third album isn't a masterpiece, but it's competent and enjoyable. Further, Starz deserves credit for trying something different and not turning this LP into a carbon copy ...

| | Prism Small Change CD (1981)
See Forever Eyes CD music
$13.49 Small Change was the last album that Prism recorded before the band's demise (reorganizing with weaker personnel in 1988 and without the late Ron Tabak). Prism substituted its vigorous rock & roll sound for a more refined blend of soft rock amiability, which paid off to some extent. The vocals are toned down, the extravagance of the horns and synthesizers are absent, and the songs reflect a more adult-oriented feel. Written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, "Don't Let Him Know" is the album's best guitar-driven track, and represents Prism's late-'70s rock & roll sound better than any other. But "Turn on Your Radar" and "Rain," especially, are two of the group's best semi-ballads, containing some of the sharpest songwriting and use of melody that Prism has ever employed. Efforts such as "When Will I See You Again," "When Love Goes Wrong," and "Wings of Love" have the band taking the prettiness of the love song a little too far, and even the delicate piano and keyboard ...
