| | Bettye Lavette Woman Like Me CD (2003)
Undercover Lover CD music
$12.89 "I can feel the pain, Lord, it's raining in my heart," Bettye LaVette howls on "The Forecast," and it sounds like it. On this stunning comeback -- her first American release in over 20 years -- the feisty soul singer rips through an hour of music with the pent-up hunger of a caged tiger at feeding time. Helped immeasurably by producer/songwriter Dennis Walker, best known for his breakout work with Robert Cray, LaVette moans, screams, shouts, pleads, and growls her way through a dozen tracks that'll leave even the most jaded R&B fan begging for more. One of the casualties of music biz politics, LaVette has a style that has only sharpened with age. In her mid-fifties at the time of this recording, the singer has a husky voice that tears at the edges, adding deeper emotion. Although the production leans toward the slick side, it leaves room for the singer to dominate each track. Walker, who wrote or co-wrote nine of these tunes, provides heart-tugging yet defiant material perfect for LaVette's take-no-prisoners approach. The singer plays the part of the scorned, aggressive woman, left behind but strong enough to know she's better off without that no-good scoundrel. Song tiles such as "Salt in My Wounds," "Serves Him Right," and "It Ain't Worth It After a While" tell the story without having to hear a lyric. LaVette squeezes every ounce of emotion from this material, ...

| | Tyrone Davis Come To Daddy CD (2003)
Undercover Lover songs
$14.49 TYRONE DAVIS BIOGRAPHYBorn May 4, 1938 in Greenville, Mississippi, Tyrone Davis is considered the ”king of romantic Chicago soul”, he moved to Chicago in 1959, where he found work as a valet for bluesman Freddie King. Eventually, Davis began singing in clubs on the city’s west and south sides, and by 1965 he had signed to the Four Brothers label., three years later, Davis moved to producer Carl Davis’ Dakar Records and earned his first hit, “Can I Change My Mind”, when a local DJ played the B-side of his Dakar debut. The song went to number one on the R&B charts, and hit the pop top five. In the seventies, he scored another R&B chart-topper with “Turn Back The Hands of Time” and “Turning Point” before switching to Columbia Records and discofying his soul. It was his smooth bedroom ballads like “In The Mood” and “It’s So Good To Be Home With You” however, that burned up the charts. He joined Future Records with founder Leo Graham, his long time songwriter and Producer in 1987 and went on to record successfully ...

| | Doc Wiley Trio Wild Cat Boogie Vol. 4: The Complete Sensation Recordings CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Undercover Lover songs
$12.35 Doc Wiley was about 50 years old by the time he recorded as a trio leader for Sensation in the late 1940s; he'd been performing since he was a teenager, and had previously recorded in the late 1920s and early 1930s. His Sensation work, however, marked his most notable endeavors as a recording artist, producing the 18 sides compiled here. Only four of Wiley's Sensation tracks had previously been issued, and one of those, "Big Four Boogie," is oddly absent from this compilation, since the acetate for the master was damaged. The other three of his previously released Sensation sides are present, accompanied by no less than 15 previously unissued cuts (including two passes at "Vibraphone Blues," and alternate takes of two Sensation singles, "Wild Cat Boogie" and the aforementioned "Big Four Boogie"). Wiley shows himself to be a competent if unexceptional blues-jazz pianist and singer, the arrangements on the cusp of the R&B era despite his relatively advanced years, with electric guitar, sax, and some vibraphones. As the titles of some of his ...
