| | Robert Palmer Rhythm & Blues CD - Import Robert Palmer Discography of CDs
When Robert Palmer released 1999's RHYTHM & BLUES, with the exception of a collection of pop standards in 1992 he hadn't released new material since the late '80s. In the interim the pop landscape had changed immeasurably. A return to his roots seemed called for. R&B had always defined Palmer's singing, and the music here combines the eclectic spirit of his early Island releases with certain elements of smooth adult pop.
Along with new material, he updates one of his lesser-known songs, the James Brown-infused "Work to Make it Work," from 1975's PRESSURE DROP, as well as covering Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On" and a Lowell George song, the gorgeous, poignant "Twenty Million Things to Do," one of the record's highlights. Elsewhere, on tracks like the powerful opener "True Love," "Mr Wiseguy," and "I Choose You," the opulent production and silky lounge lizard vibe are reminiscent of Bryan Ferry's later work. As always, the musicianship is top-notch. Songs like "All the Will in the World" would fit comfortably on '80s records like CLUES.

On the heels of FESTIVAL came the disco-soul-pop-spiced INNER SECRETS, with a whole new Santana lineup. Greg Walker is the main man at the microphone this time around on these upbeat, radio-friendly cuts. While the band's personnel and sound are consistently in a state of flux and evolution, two constants in Santana are the presence of positive messages and, of course, founding guitar hero Carlos Santana--albeit the focus of this particular recording is much less on his playing and more on the overall production.
"Move On" stomps along with a thumping rock pulse, funky clavinet, and harmonized verses that quote the illustrious Sly Stone with the always-encouraging line, "You Can Make It if You Try." "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)" ...

| | Leon Lee Dorsey Song Of Songs CD (1999)
Rhythm & Blues music CDs
$13.79 Leading a tight, cohesive quartet, bass player/leader Leon Lee Dorsey's second album is devoted to eight of his originals and one very fine standard, "Old Folks." His first album was 180 degrees the other way, almost entirely devoted to originals. The play list reflects Dorsey's confidence that as played by his talented group, his material is of sufficient interest that it can sustain almost an entire CD. As to the artistry of the players on this session, there is no doubt. With respect to Dorsey's compositional skills, the jury is still out. Much of the material on this disc brings back recordings made during the 1950s and 1960s by any number of good small jazz groups. "The Collector" and "Baptism" recall the Modern Jazz Quartet, with vibist Bryan Carrott and pianist Carlton Holmes assuming the roles of Milt Jackson and John Lewis, respectively. "Chill'n" is a blues number in the manner of Red Garland or Milt Buckner. Dorsey, as much on this track as any, shows his considerable ability as a bass player. "Song of Songs," where things get really heavy, is the most intense piece on the album with thundering piano chords, numerous Vincent Ector drum rolls, and resounding vibes with Dorsey's bass providing the rhythmic underpinning, something Keith Jarrett might consider. "Mecklenburg Morning" highlights the skillful ...

| | Coral Roots & Echoes CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Rhythm & Blues album
$13.59 It's hard to remember now in retrospect, but in the summer of 2002, the Coral were going to be the saviors of the British indie music scene: their debut album was hyped to the skies, and their terrific lead single "Dreaming of You" was rightly praised as probably the best single to come out of Liverpool since "There She Goes" by the La's. But with the ascension of Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, and the whole neo-Brit-pop scene, the Coral's amalgam of '60s freakbeat and '80s post-punk didn't fit in the zeitgeist of the time, and so even though their albums have remained consistently fine, they've generally been ignored by most folks outside of a devoted cult. Roots & Echoes, though it's easily the Coral's best album since 2003's Magic and Medicine, isn't going to change that. As the exceedingly old-fashioned cover art suggests, Roots & Echoes takes as its starting point the era immediately preceding the psychedelic explosion, circa 1966, when folk-rock and sunshine pop were melding into a new sound, AM radio-friendly but moving outside of the strict confines of the format. Echoes of cult faves like the Beau Brummels, the Cyrkle, and the first side of Love's Da Capo flitter through these songs, which are filled with ringing guitars and colored with strings, flutes, bongos, and other ear-candy touches. James Skelly's sweet-toned vocals are a perfect accompaniment to the melodic ...
