Christian rock music's detractors often cite the eternally sunny, feel-good "I'm okay, you're okay" attitude of many CCM albums as a quality antithetical to real rock & roll. While Casting Crowns certainly offer their fair share of optimistic praise, the group also takes a page from the original 1960's San Francisco Jesus Freak movement's aggressively evangelical book. On several songs, lead vocalist/lyricist Mark Hall quite directly points out the disparity between the Bible's teaching and the world's shortcomings, calling out all manners of hypocrisy, materialism, and cowardice, and then demanding an explanation. This unusually forceful message is framed in an appropriately bombastic arena-rock sound that recalls the heyday of bands like Asia and Kansas. In addition, Hall's voice is a powerful tool perfectly suited to throwing around a little fire and brimstone, often sounding like a cross between Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd. A refreshingly unabashed statement of Christian fundamentalism in the literal sense of the term, CASTING CROWNS offers an energetic and tuneful missive.

Casting Crowns
$6.75 Originally released on Motown Records. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
An 11-song snapshot of the Dazz Band's Motown stint that includes the not-often-featured "To the Roof," whose origins date back to "Take It to the Woof" by Cleveland, OH-based funk band Morning Maniac led by ex-Dazz Band member Kenny Pettus who's the lead voice on the Earth, Wind and Fire-ish "I Might As Well Forget About Loving You." But other than that, there are no surprises, just straight-ahead digitally remastered Dazz Band blasts that blow you away in CD format ("Let It Whip"'s bassline is hypnotizing). For lovers, "Invitation to Love" and "Knock, Knock" are bonafide heart stirrers and the only two slow jams in the bunch. Not as complete as the 1994 Funkology: The Definitive Dazz ...
| | Mercyme Almost There CD (2001)
Casting Crowns
$11.29 ALMOST THERE is state-of-the-art worship rock from the wittily named quintet whose major label debut this is. Mercyme have an almost '80s style, and unless you listen closely to their lyrics you could mistake ALMOST THERE for something by the Alarm or a late effort by Big Country. Their popularity attests to seven years of hard work (they have half a dozen independent albums to their credit) and the burgeoning US worship music scene.
Though some may find the worship genre disconcertingly one-dimensional, Mercyme have an original way with a lyric, rendering songs like "How Great Is Your Love" and "Bless Me Indeed (Jabez's Song)" fresh and inspirational, while the shining simplicity of a song like "Cannot Say ...
| | Mercyme Undone CD (2004)
Casting Crowns
$11.59 UNDONE continues MercyMe's legacy of earnest, melodic, devotional rock with just a tinge of crossover country, lying musically somewhere between Restless Heart and Five For Fighting. Lyrically, the sextet is similar to bands like Sixpence None The Richer in its ability to balance its religiously provocative lyrics with just enough subtlety to reach the most secular of ears. Ballads like "Where You Lead Me" and "Everything Impossible" are both eminently hopeful and immediately engaging, perfect ear candy for pop radio fans while remaining true to the spirit of glorification. On UNDONE, MercyMe again shows that it has something to offer both the Christian and pop worlds.
Christian Rock band MercyMe is a classic example ...

| | Mercyme Coming Up To Breathe CD (2006)
Casting Crowns
$11.29 CCM outfit MercyMe had four albums to their credit before releasing 2006's COMING UP TO BREATHE. While the effort boasts the group's usual blend of pop-rock structures, accessible melodies, and faith-based lyrics, COMING UP TO BREATHE finds MercyMe refining their craft to offer up some of the best songwriting and ...

| | Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater Rock 'N' Roll City CD (2003)
Casting Crowns
$14.15 ROCK 'N' ROLL CITY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Occasionally in the musical world, a younger act will bring in veteran musicians to lend an air of legitimacy to its sound, and a legend may bring in junior artists to update his or her sound. For his 2003 release, revered Chicago blues guitarist Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater tapped the eccentric surf-rock combo Los Straitjackets, and what ensues is fiery, rhythmic rock & roll that sounds (musically not production-wise) plucked off an archival recording from, say, 1956, when Clearwater was just starting out.
While Clearwater is generally filed under "blues," he's always been known for his versatility and the amorphous nature of his music, which has regularly wandered into R&B and rock. It's no surprise then that he's routinely compared to Chuck Berry, and, on tracks like "Hillbilly Rock" and "Ding Dong Daddy," any difference is negligible. Furthermore, on ROCK 'N' ROLL CITY, Clearwater imparts the essence of rock in its infancy, when the blues and country influences were still unmistakable, particularly on tracks like "Old Time Rocker" and "Peggy Sue" (not the Holly classic). And he pours the spirit of rock all over his cover of Fats Domino's "Let the Four Winds Blow." ...

| | Funkadelic Finest CD (2005)
Casting Crowns
$12.29 Contains their Westbound singles from 1969 to 1976, including Funkadelic's first significant single "I Bet You," co-written by George Clinton while under contract to Motown for five fruitless years. Motown never released it or any other Parliament song. Billy Butler's rendition of "I Bet You" preceded Funkadelic's stoner version. Guitars dominate every track, either as lead instruments or as electric wallpaper; Bernie Worrell's keyboard and synthesizer skills glue everything together. The erotic "I Wanna Know if It's Good for You" messes with your head for ten funky minutes. Worrell plays ...

$7.35 Hey Everyone…!Ok, so I have to speak about me…right? Describe myself? Oh well! Let’s give it a shot.I’m Spanish. I’m 25 years old. I was born in Madrid and I lived there until I was 21. Actually, my mother is Italian, so I guess I’m half and half…but my main language is Spanish.I started learning music at age 5, after seeing my sister learn violin and play along with my mom at the piano…I was so jealous, I wanted to be a part of it, so I insisted they let me learn violin. Sometimes I still wonder WHY!!! Anyway, I did learn it. It’s been 20 years playing it. All of my training was in classical music, I went to great schools and had great teachers, I finished my career in Spain, and then I came to the US to pursue a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance. I graduated from Temple University in 2004. I was 23.All of my life, while playing the violin in orchestras and stuff, I felt that something was missing. I always wrote songs and sang, and played the piano, and enjoyed that INMENSELY, much more than playing the violin. Sure, sometimes it is fun, but you’re always playing music that someone else wrote, not your own. There’s a limit to how much you can express yourself by just doing that. At least that’s how I feel it.And also, all of my life I’ve felt that I’d love to meet lots of people, share things, thoughts, dreams. But I’ll never be able to meet that many people, I mean, GET TO KNOW THEM, right? So I figure, instead, I can try to put a piece of myself out there, and give people a chance to meet me. That piece of me is my music. And I’m never as vulnerable, honest, open and naked as I am in my songs. That’s the most intimate part of me…the things I’ll never dare speaking out loud, I sing them.Ok, so when I finished my Masters, I decided to pursue seriously the singing/songwriting/music producing part of me. And it’s a hard thing to do, I still play in a lot of orchestras and chamber groups, and it’s pretty hard to juggle everything and pay the bills. But it’s worthy. I’m fighting for my dream, and I love music too much to EVER give up.As for the violin, I’ve been doing it for so long, I couldn’t just stop it. I don’t think I ever will. So, I introduced it to my songs. I’m really interested in the fusion of styles and in taking things to the next level, so I guess my music is pop with a touch of classical violin. I think it sounds kinda cool.Anyway, that’s me. Why should you buy this cd? Because it's not your typical Halloween music. Because it's funny and silly, both in English and Spanish, good for kids and adults, good party music with a great ...
