(1 Customer Review)
Composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Phil Thornton has collaborated with Sinead O'Connor, Hossam Ramzy, Talking Heads, Die Laughing, and the English psychedelic band Mandragon. His solo experiments have encompassed electronica, tribal fusion, Celtic music, and New Age ambience, with a particular attention to cross-genre exploration, the juxtaposition of unusual instruments, and high production values. TIBETAN MEDITATION is a comparatively low-key work for Thornton, concentrating, as the title indicates, on creating a calming sound-space conducive to sustained meditation. Fans of Thornton's work will recognize his deliberate use of space and the meticulous balance of musical elements on this series of soothing compositions that evoke the soul-stirring, cloud-swept peaks of the Himalayas.
Personnel: Phil Thornton (various instruments).

| | Jane Birkin Master Serie, Vol. 1 CD (1998) France
Tibetan Meditation album
$15.55 MASTER SERIE V. 1 collects the best from French pop singer Jane Birkin. The songs "Decadanse," "Jane B.," and "Yesterday Yes a Day," and most of the others here, were recorded during Birkin's best period.
French actress Jane Birkin made her biggest international hit with the sexually charged "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus," which is included in this overview of her recordings from 1968-1985. Serge Gainsbourg collaborated on every track as writer or co-writer, and sometimes as a duet vocalist. The duets with Gainsbourg sometimes attempt to recapture the erotic atmosphere of Birkin's most famous song, although she does not repeat the orgasmic moaning that made it so controversial (and popular). The classic French pop sides from 1973 and earlier are by far the best, while the later efforts suffer from dated production and weak songwriting. The most interesting of her later recordings include "Ex-Fan Des Sixties," a strange metrically challenged litany of English and American rock & roll artists, and "Quoi," the theme from a French television series. Master Serie succeeds as a career overview, but a collection that focused solely on her early years would offer a more consistent listening experience. ~ Greg Adams
Jane Birkin, the fashion model turned pop star and wife of Serge Gainsbourg, held her own as a recording artists from her initial outing with Serge in 1969 until the late '80s, with a few brief comebacks in the 1990s. With her vulnerable, threadbare voice and non-imposing demeanor, Birkin was able to allow a song to possess her completely and respond by letting her ...

Tibetan Meditation CD music
$17.09 A Recent Future includes some of Keelaghan’s most acclaimed works yet. It was nominated for a Juno award in 1997 (Keelaghan’s second) and spent two months on the Gavin Americana charts in the U.S.“The influences never stop.”That’s Canadian singer songwriter James Keelaghan talking and it could be the slogan for folk music. But James is answering a question about his own musical background. Who influenced him? How did someone who “didn’t come from a musical family per se” become a leading international musical figure? First, he says, the family loved music and offered appreciation and support. Then there is that influence factor:“My father was a great influence as a story teller, my mother for a sense of humour. I listened to a lot of Irish traditional stuff when I grew up, tempered with Jethro Tull, Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Joni Mitchell, Captain Beefheart.”So, who has influenced Keelaghan?“Liam Clancy for voice and guitar style and the poetry of Yeats. I love Harry Belafonte –the world’s greatest stage performer – and Pete Seeger – a fine balladeer, but influences never stop. I am influenced by David Francey, Oliver Schroer, Hugh McMillan, and a host of others now.”Don’t forget to throw in the history influence. Keelaghan earned a degree in history from the University of Calgary, and his passion for it has inspired some of his most celebrated songs. His debut album Timelines (1987 Tranquilla Music) was a collection of historically ...
