Summer Times is an unusual record for pianist Franck Amsallem because, instead of him exclusively performing originals as on most of his previous recordings, he revives five standards. Amsallem shows that he can swing à la Wynton Kelly whenever he wishes and can infuse ballads with honest feeling. His interplay with bassist Johannes Weidenmüller and drummer Joe Chambers is impressive, falling somewhere between Oscar Peterson (where the pianist dominates) and Bill Evans (with equality between the three musicians). Even the three originals are essentially swinging hard bop. Summer Times is the perfect introduction for listeners not familiar with the fine playing of the underrated Amsallem. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Milt Hinton Trio CD (1977)
Summer Times CD music
$14.75 Over the years, Hank Jones' work has been impressively consistent. The veteran pianist can, at times, be predictable and short on surprises, but rarely does one encounter a Jones album that is flat-out disappointing. Like other albums that Jones provided in the late '70s, The Trio doesn't take a lot of chances, but is solid and pleasing. Produced by Chiaroscuro president Hank O'Neal, this 1977 session finds Jones forming an acoustic piano trio with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Bobby Rosengarden -- and not surprisingly, the three of them enjoy a consistently strong rapport on original material as well as familiar standards like "I'll Remember April," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and "S'Wonderful." Hinton ...
| | Bob Mover Fatha's Day: An Earl Hines Songbook CD (2003)
Summer Times music CDs
$13.85 John Hicks' fifth tribute CD for High Note honors yet another pianist associated with the city of Pittsburgh, the great Earl Fatha Hines. Once again Hicks is joined by his favorite sidemen, bassist Dwayne Dolphin and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Like his earlier releases in this series, Hicks plays a number of songs written by, or indelibly associated with, the musician he salutes, though there are a couple of exceptions. Two tracks were leftovers from the sessions for Nightwind: An Erroll Garner Songbook, though one could have easily imagined how Hines might have approached the lovely ballad "Almost Spring," or Hicks' swinging blues on "Twelve Bars for Linton," which is dedicated ...

| | Joe Tex From The Roots Came The Rapper CD (1972) (Import) United Kingdom
Summer Times album
$16.95 The era this material represents wasn't an artistic or commercial high-water mark in Tex's career, although it's OK. Like his late-'60s sides, it bridges smooth soul with funk and anticipates rap, though it's a little lusher than his slightly earlier stuff. From From the Roots Came the Rapper itself, a highlight is the epic, eight-minute version of "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)," which naturally includes some extended spoken sections. That and the similarly constructed 11-minute cover of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" make you wonder whether there was some influence traveling back and forth between Tex and Isaac Hayes. The rest of that LP had fair, and not great, good-natured yet earthy soul with a bit more of a slick Northern soul production influence than his '60s records. Tex himself, surprisingly, wrote just one of the tunes, though the other writers included stalwarts Jerry Williams Jr. (aka Swamp Dogg) ("The Baby Is Mine") and Don Covay ("I Can Do It Better"). ~ Richie Unterberger
The first ten tracks of this CD comprised the totality of Tex's 1971 Atlantic LP From the Roots Came the Rapper. This isn't exactly a straight reissue of that record, though, since it tacks on ten additional tracks recorded in the early '70s. | | A C Newman Slow Wonder CD (2004)
Summer Times CD music
$9.89 New Pornographers frontman A.C. Newman goes solo for this instant classic of slightly retro rock-pop. Clocking in at a little more than 30 minutes, 2004's THE SLOW WONDER is a gem--a rocking, orchestrated album that recalls the best tunes on the airwaves in the 1970s. A close inspection of lyrics reveals the sad underside to that era's optimism, ...
| | Art Ensemble Of Chicago Sirius Calling CD (2004)
Summer Times music CDs
$13.15 Legendary free-jazz group Art Ensemble of Chicago was dealt a major blow when trumpeter Lester Bowie died in 1999, but the soldiered on without him surprisingly well. However, further tragedy befell the Ensemble when founding bassist Malachi Favors passed away in January of 2004, shortly after the completion of SIRIUS CALLING. In the booklet, the surviving members note the after-life significance of Sirius in ...
| | Chiara Civello Last Quarter Moon CD (2005)
Summer Times songs
$12.79 While she's a fresh and exotic voice on the recording scene, the multi-talented, Italian-born, internationally minded singer and musician has been keeping great company. With a vocal range and style that quickly bring Dianne Reeves to mind, she's recorded with Tony Bennett and James Taylor; so impressed Burt Bacharach that he collaborated here on the lush, emotional ballad "Trouble"; snagged ...
| | Carole King Collection CDs (2006)
Summer Times album
$21.69 The Collection includes 3 separate albums: REALLY ROSIE (1975)/MUSIC (1971)/TAPESTRY (1971).
This is an Australian compilation of some of the best work by Carole King. While it is represented and contains all classic tracks, it is rather generic in its presentation and leaves so much stuff out ("So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "You've Got a Friend" are all missing!) it's ridiculous. This could easily have been a 12- to 15-cut collection with time to spare, so one has to wonder what the producers of this comp were smoking when they assembled it. For the money there are many compilations out there that leave this one in the dust. The star rating is for the music, not the presentation. ~ Thom Jurek
This three-pack collects some of Carole King's finest moments from the '70s: her thoughtful, playful Really Rosie, the soundtrack to Maurice Sendak's 1975 animated TV special; 1971's Music; and King's definitive album, the classic Tapestry. Between the three discs, this set features some of King's biggest and best-known songs, including "I Feel the Earth Move," "It's Too Late," "It's Going to Take Some Time," "Brother, Brother" and "Really Rosie." This collection is a convenient way to pick up some of the best work by one of America's definitive singer/songwriters. ~ Heather Phares
