(5 Customer Reviews)
Patty Griffin's first live outing is a fine, poetic, flesh and blood example of what a live recording should be. This is as undressed as it gets; a fine record of a truly magical show at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nash Vegas; a fitting end to a tour that began with the hope of getting a new record on a new label across. The end result is one of those recordings where the singer becomes her songs. Her guests, including Buddy and Julie Miller, Emmylou Harris, John Deaderick, and Jay Joyce all end up as parts and parcels in the songs, rather than as personalities helping to interpret them. The world woven from Griffin's three studio recordings, combined with the energy coming from audience, and the stage itself, make for one of the most engaging, warm, and poetic listening experiences issued in a decade, and one of the best live outings on record. The package includes a DVD with videos for the songs "Rain" and "Chief," and a slice of life documentary of life on the road during a memorable year. Griffin's delivery on "Christina," is nervous, grainy, full of the heartbreak of her subject (Christina Onassis), "Rain" offers an acceptance and resignation of a soul in flux and pain which refuses to yield its desire to transcend. And on it goes, into the night with warmth abounding, and a heart opening, like Frida Kahlo's: revealing everything in the moment. in the safety of camaraderie. and the in the naked light of song itself. ~ Thom Jurek
Includes a bonus DVD.

The only downfall is that it wasn't a double disc. Submitted by rn_speer (Searcy, AR, US) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Buy it! I only wish it was longer. Would be nice if the audience noise could be removed from the CD and the talking between songs, but despite that, what a great album! Submitted by a reviewer (Atlanta, Georgia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
strong but more electric This is a good Patty Griffin album. I wish she would do a little more of her rock and roll stuff. Submitted by a reviewer (Durham, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Patty Griffin, songs from the heart I have followed this girl from her debut CD,Living with Ghosts through to her latest studio CD 1000 Kisses and I never cease to be amazed at her brilliance. This live CD captures Patty performing material from all her CDs. Apart from her obvious songwriting skills she manages to recruit the right musicians to compliment her amazing songs. With her warm personality, guitar and songbook Patty Griffin should be mega if there is any justice in this world. For those of you that haven't heard her yet, buy this CD and weep. $16.69 This CD offers the complete '40s and '50s recordings of Paula Watson, from the charming, laid-back Supreme recordings with accompaniment led by guitarist Tiny Webb, to the solid Big Apple R&B backing of the Joe Davis session, arranged by Fred Norman and
Often compared with Nellie Lutcher, Julia Lee, Rose Murphy, and Martha Davis, rowdy vocalist Paula Watson was a vigorous pianist who could lay down a mean boogie-woogie blues, as demonstrated on her very best recorded performance, "Paula's Nightmare." Watson cut eight sides for the Supreme record label in 1948, including a simple novelty singalong number with the unassuming title "A Little Bird Told Me." Composed by pianist Harvey Brooks, a veteran of the West Coast jazz scene in the 1920s, this song had only just begun to catch on when the Decca record company released their own version sung by Evelyn Knight. After this became a lucrative hit, Supreme sued Decca for $400,000 in damages, but the judge ruled in favor of the larger company. Supreme was soon entirely out of business, and by December of 1949 Paula Watson was working for Decca. This Classics chronological compendium contains all or most of her recorded works. Watson's eight Supreme sides illustrate her range of mostly novelty material, distinctly corny and at times somewhat overbearing. Backed by guitarist Tiny Webb and an otherwise unidentified band, Watson seems to have enjoyed cutting up every step of the way and even used human-generated sound effects ...

$13.15 GINSTER was officially formed in the winter of 2003, but the beginnings of what would come to be known as GINSTER existed as early as 1998.The guitarist, Neil, and the drummer, Ryan, would randomly get together to make some noise, create some original material and, most importantly, give themselves a creative outlet. In time, both Ryan and Neil started to notice that writing together was easy; songs started to develop their own sound, color, and shape. Eventually, Neil and Ryan's random practices turned into weekly practices. These weekly practices created music that was melodic, powerful, and groove-oriented. With some original material written, the two began the search for a bass player. About two months and three bass players later, Neil ran into Zach, an acquaintance, at a local restaurant. After some discussion and a few cheeseburgers, Neil found out that Zach played bass and Zach learned that Neil needed a bassist. A few sundays later, Neil, Ryan, and Zach got together and cranked out some music in Ryan's basement. Needless to say, all three worked well together; they got along musically and personally. After a few of these Sunday practices, Zach permanently joined ...
