In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era.
"Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven." The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected ...

The 24 years-in-the-making sequel to James Taylor's first best-of anthology, reassuringly VOLUME 2 sports the same minimalist graphic cover design. Not surprisingly, the music reflects a similar aesthetic; Taylor has always been a careful craftsman and something of a minimalist, favoring small, intimate-sounding acoustic backdrops to electric bombast.
It's a testament to his vision that the songs here are very much of a piece with the songs on VOLUME 1. Three covers--Buddy Holly's "Everyday," Carole King's "Up on the Roof," and Otis Blackwell's "Handy Man"--demonstrate that Taylor still has no peer as an interpreter of '50s and '60s pop-rock. Other highlights include his wonderfully catchy Motown pastiche "Your Smiling Face," the rueful, yet stirring "Never Die Young," and the concluding "Enough to Be on Your Way," featuring a guest appearance by none other than cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

If you want to make it onto the next volume of Warner's What Is Hip?: Remix Project (the cover here says "Volume One," so let's assume), here is the not-so-secret formula. Start with a trippy and serene intro that you'll put under the main tune later, then drop in the original song's intro so everyone goes, "oh, it's that song!" then lightly dust your radio staple with electronic beats and bleeps. You can use a line from the song's chorus and echo it over your hypnotic breakdown if you like, but whatever you do, don't mess with the original too much. With nearly everyone playing it so safe, What Is Hip? is the sound of AM-radio electronica with just a smidgeon of camp -- a smidgeon that disappears on the second run-through of this bland exercise in updating.
