| | Very Best Of India CD - Import
This compilation is an attempt at an all-encompassing overview of Indian music, but falls short by trying to cover too much territory. There is precious little in the way of classical or folk music, focusing instead on the burgeoning Asian underground and Bollywood scenes. In addition, many of these artists aren't from India at all, representing instead the largely British Indian diaspora community. Then there's an Alice Coltrane piece included, presumably because it's titled "Journey in Satchadananda" and there's a tamboura on it! (Alice Coltrane is neither Indian nor from India.) There is a bunch of good material here, but it's a bit of an unfocused mishmash. ~ Sean Westergaard
2003 compilation highlights Indian music in all it's forms, including folk, classical, Bollywood film themes, jazz, pop, & dance. Deluxe double gatefold digipak featuring 28 tracks with 8-page booklet. Nascente Records.

Very Best Of India
$10.35 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even ...

Very Best Of India
$8.99 Truth in advertising, Too Hard to Swallow is UGK before they got funked up, grinding over some minimal, hard beats that aren't as complementary to their delivery as the smoother production they would later favor. Still, thanks to members Bun B and Pimp C's ability to write memorable rhymes, the album -- which repeats some tracks from their impossible to find indie release The Southern Way -- is a winner with three mammoth singles so important to the UGK story. "Something Good" puts a crooked beat under Rufus' most popular number, ...

Very Best Of India
$13.51 Thirty-one years may not seem like such a long time in the life of a human being, a tree or a folk song. But in the fickle world of modern music, where pop stars shy of their 21st birthdays often see their careers dumped into oldies bins, thirty-one years is a very long time. So as David Tamulevich ...

$40.75 Steve Lukather (formerly of Toto) and adventurous jazz guitarist Larry Carlton team up on NO SUBSTITUTIONS, recorded live in Japan.
Lighting-fast phrases, spectacular solos, and soothing statements abound in this first ever "live" collaboration by two guitar icons. Larry Carlton on the left side and Steve Lukather on the right side are astounding on No Substitutions: Live in Osaka. This was the first recorded onstage collaboration of the guitarists, even ...

Very Best Of India
$15.99 Us3’s fifth album Schizophonic sees producer Geoff Wilkinson’s rolling cast of rappers and musicians returning to the task of fitting the pieces of the jazz and hip-hop puzzle into one kaleidoscopic whole.Building on the group’s mammoth 50-date/14-country 2005 European tour, the sound of Schizophonic is a lively, raucous and uptempo affair with a heavy emphasis on live playing married to crunchy hip-hop beats. The album features two new rappers, Akil Dasan and Gaston, both of whom Geoff found at New York’s legendary underground hangout the Nuyorican Poets Café. Akil’s rhythmical mastery is put to the test on a variety of beats ranging from straight-up hip-hop to Brazilian sambas to straight-ahead jazz breaks. Gaston ...

| | Fantastic Mr Fox Fantastic Mr. Fox CD (2009) Original Soundtrack
Very Best Of India
$11.18 Nearly all of Wes Anderson's films have had a strong sense of childlike wonder, but FANTASTIC MR. FOX, which is based on Roald Dahl's charming book, is his first film specifically for children. The movie's soundtrack manages to take nearly all of Anderson's musical fascinations -- Anglophilia, Francophilia, '60s pop and rock, and music from other gentler and/or quirkier times -- and tailor them to a younger audience. Though Anderson's films and their soundtracks have been criticized for valuing style over substance, FANTASTIC MR. FOX's stylization is fitting, given that the film's characters are stop-motion animal puppets. The soundtrack's songs and Alexandre Desplat's score mix delicacy and rough-and-tumble energy while reminding listeners of what children's movies and music used to be like before being cool took precedence over everything else. While there are two songs from Anderson favorites the Beach Boys, "Heroes and Villains" and "Ol' Man River," it's Burl Ives who contributes the most songs to FANTASTIC MR. FOX. Ives' grandfatherly tone made ...
