These live solo tracks from Tomato's vault were recorded in Germany in 1994 and 1996, near the end of Townes Van Zandt's life. While they may not be the best of his many live releases, they aptly demonstrates why this singer/songwriter is so revered. With a voice capable of carrying all the pain, sadness, and regret in the world, Van Zandt brought a weary resignation to every song he sang. Here, the highlight is his rendition of the old folk song "Coo Coo," which, inVan Zandt's hands, becomes a bluesy lament to a lifetime of rambling and gambling, and the pain and deep regret are so tangible in his voice that the song loses its inherent mysterious center, becoming the cry of a haunted and wounded man. This probably isn't the album to start with to get a taste of this marvelous talent, but longtime fans will want to seek it out to hear Van Zandt in some of his last performances. ~ Steve Leggett
