Confines of Heat is an excellent split release from post-rockers the Mercury Program and Maserati. The two bands have a similar sound, making for a near-perfect pairing. The Mercury Program have a slightly jazzier emphasis and make extensive use of a Fender Rhodes, while Maserati are more rock oriented. The tunes themselves all have that late-night chillout vibe that post-rockers tend to purvey, except "Wires Were Towers," where Maserati turns up the energy a notch. None of this is new or revelatory, but it is extremely well-played and highly enjoyable. Fans of Tortoise should take note of both of these bands. [Also included is a DVD of unreleased videos.] ~ Sean Westergaard
Includes bonus DVD.
Recorded in 2003.
The Mercury Program includes: Tom Reno (vocals, guitar); Dave Lebleu (Fender Rhodes piano, vibraphone, drums); Whit Travisano (Fender Rhodes piano); Sander Travisano (bass).

Confines Of Heat album
$10.39 They rock, they roar, they tiptoe on little magic elfen feet, and then they roar some more. They're probably the closest thing to honest-to-god jazz-rock since Corea and DiMeola returned to forever. And while the Mercury Program are technically not an instrumental group, the vocals are ...
| | Mercury Program Data Learn The Language CD (2002)
Confines Of Heat CD music
$9.49 The third album by Florida-based quartet Mercury Program is a small departure, eliminating vocals entirely and adding electronics for the first time to what had previously been a richly acoustic, almost jazzy sound. The band is still centered around Whitney Travisano's electric piano and vibraphone (guitarist ...
| | Album Leaf Seal Beach EP CD (2003) Bonus Tracks
Confines Of Heat music CDs
$9.05 The Album Leaf is the brainchild of Jimmy LaValle, whose music is a curious mixture of moody keyboard and guitar motifs and stark electronic effects. This combination yields an atmospheric patois that is both exotic and strangely familiar.
A collection of brooding instrumental works, SEAL BEACH represents an introspective journey for LaValle. The opening track, "Malmo," blends swirling record-player needle noise with a mechanistic backbeat and a repeating keyboard riff (played on a Fender Rhodes). The less melancholic title track also prominently features the Rhodes. This time, LaValle's use of bell tones makes the Rhodes sound more like a celesta, drenched in vibrato. Other tracks such as "One Minute" and "Last Time Here" change character altogether as a folksy acoustic guitar takes over. Even on these pieces, LaValle uses ambient effects to maintain a large, open sound. The use of violin, drums, and other percussion adds further color to many ...
| | Spoon Gimme Fiction CDs (2005)
Confines Of Heat songs
$12.95 Spoon are purveyors of a stylish brand of indie rock bearing equal doses of sexy attitude and immediately accessible songcraft. GIMME FICTION has a fair bit in common with 2002's KILL THE MOONLIGHT, synthesizing influences that include everyone from the Beatles to Pavement into an appealing, soulful package. Yet GIMME FICTION is decidedly more polished and intimate than its predecessor, and it boasts a stronger ...

XTC's NONSUCH falls somewhere between the high-polish shine of ORANGES & LEMONS and the pastoral reverie of SKYLARKING. The album also marked the end of the band's dealings with their original label, the beginning of protracted legal maneuverings, and a seven-year gap in releases (which ended with APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE in 1999). The generous total of 17 songs was also the result of the three-year recording gap preceding it. Included are ample rewards ranging from the rocking ("The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead," "Crocodile," "The Disappointed") to the soothing ...
