Carlos Santana seemed to kick off an early-21st century music industry craze -- by combining a crusty classic rock veteran with other star-studded talent (as evidenced by Santana's highly commercial yet mega-hit Supernatural). On first glance, it appears as that longtime Yes guitarist Steve Howe also followed this guideline to a degree with his 2003 solo release, Light Walls. But in actuality, the double-disc set collects highlights from a pair of Howe solo releases -- 1999's Portraits of Bob Dylan and 2001's Natural Timbre. There's no Rob Thomas or Lauryn Hill to be found here, but there are quite a few names that will be familiar to many who have a Yes CD or two in their collections. Featured are guest appearances by Yes' Jon Anderson, Asia's (and brief Yes member) Geoffrey Downes, and GTR's Max Bacon. Expectedly, quite a few Bob Dylan covers abound throughout, including "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" (which features Anderson) and "Going, Going, Gone" (which features Bacon), as well as Howe originals, including the country strains of "Family Tree" and the Asia-sounding title track. To sample what Howe was up to in the late '90s and early 21st century, Light Walls is a swell sampler. ~ Greg Prato
24 tracks compilation from the legendary Yes guitarist. Features some of his finest solo recordings including "Seraphin", "Voyagers", "Quantum Guitars" and "Natural Timbre".

Carnivorous, alcohol-loving Rick Wakeman was always at odds with the health-food mindset of the other Yes members, though his brash pomp was at the heart of their sound. When he was replaced by Patrick Moraz (late of '70s prog obscurites Refugee and Mainhorse), it freed the band up to dive headlong into the ethereal, spiritually oriented themes that had always been Jon Anderson's stock in trade. Thus, RELAYER consists of three extended cuts (the 22-minute "Gates of Delirium" was ...

Howe's Tricks
$16.09 If there's one thing listeners have learned about the solo projects of Yes members (or former Yes members), it's that no one should expect their solo output to be a carbon copy of Close to the Edge or Fragile. That has been true of Chris Squire and Alan White; it is also true of Steve Howe, whose solo projects have ranged from Yes-minded to not so Yes-minded. This 2003 release finds a 56-year-old Howe leading a five-man group called Remedy, which unites the guitarist/singer with two of his sons (keyboardist Virgil Howe and drummer Dylan Howe) as well as saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and bassist Derrick Taylor. Far from an exact replica ...

Yes' second (and least successful) album was a transitional effort; the group trying for a more produced and sophisticated sound through the use of an orchestra -- the use of orchestra was apparently Jon Anderson's idea, and the rest of the group, except for Peter Banks, went ...

| | Antigone Rising From The Ground Up CD (2005)
Howe's Tricks
$9.29 The first album to be launched by Starbucks-sponsored Hear Music series, FROM THE GROUND UP is the mainstream debut by the all-female pop-rock outfit Antigone Rising. The band's proper studio debut, DRAMA CLUB, was reputedly ready for release at the time the band inked the Starbucks deal, but FROM THE GROUND UP, a live-in-the-studio recording of acoustic numbers, gave the public the jump on the group's earnest, accessible folk-tinged pop, a sound that puts Antigone Rising on the same trajectory for commercial success as Sheryl Crow, the Indigo Girls, and Alanis Morrissette.
Antigone Rising seemed to, well, rise out of nowhere in the early days of 2005, appearing on VH1 regularly and receiving the honor of being the first new artist given an entry in Starbucks' Hear Music series. Of course, this sudden omnipresence didn't happen overnight. The group had been kicking around since the late '90s, appearing on some shows on the 1998 Lilith Fair tour, and releasing a bunch of self-released records before signing with Lava in 2004. The band had a studio debut, provisionally titled Drama Club, all set to go in 2005 -- as of the first week of May, their bio on their official site concerned the release of Drama Club, which was nowhere on the release schedule at that point -- when the Hear Music deal materialized and the powers that be decided that ...
