After much debate and a labored attempt at completing his contributions to a new studio offering, a disenchanted Matt Barlow chose to step down as vocalist of power-metal veterans Iced Earth. Enter Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was eagerly awaiting a formal announcement that metal god Rob Halford had rejoined his then-band, Judas Priest. Anticipating the obvious (and long-rumored inevitable), Owens weighed a number of offers before joining forces with Iced Earth. He quickly helped them finish their recording, and enthusiastically joined their ranks.
Principal writer, guitarist, and noted history buff Jon Schaffer has crafted a classic metal album that is sure to stand apart from the nu-metal din. THE GLORIOUS BURDEN focuses on conflicts and tragedies inspired by documented world events, steering away from the fantasy concepts of the band's previous works. Metal enthusiasts familiar with the contemporary leanings of Owens' style on Priest's JUGULATOR and DEMOLTION discs will hear a flair for melody and dramatic, soaring vocals, not flexed since his days in Winter's Bane (the singer's little-known original band). The September 11th-themed "When the Eagle Cries" and Civil War epic "Gettysburg," in particular, stand out as career defining moments for Iced Earth, a group reborn.

CMJ (1/19/04, p.20) - "[Owens] is a perfect fit on THE GLORIOUS BURDEN..." Glorious Burden Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Best Iced Earth album ever. This is a classic metal album. I have been an Iced Earth fan for a long time, and believe me when I tell you that Tim Owens is the singer that this band needs to become a global success. The Glorious Burden is an album without fillers, it deserve to be in any classic metal collection. Submitted by Angel (Denver, Colorado.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This album "Rips" After Matt Barlow (lead vocals) left Iced Earth I was worried about the future of one of my favorite bands. This album puts those fears to rest. The new singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens fits the music very nicely and the music is definetly Iced Earth! Submitted by metaldeath (Flushing, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
one of my favorite albums "when the eagle cries", "the reckoning (don't tread on me)", "greenface", "valley forge" "attila" and "hollow man" are my favorite songs from this album. the rest is good. Submitted by Anthony (El Cajon, California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This album screams METAL! Tim Owens is the perfect vocalist for Iced Earth.Jon Schaffer has finally found his man,and "The Ripper "has finally found his band.Tim has taken a lot of flak for the dissapointing "Jugulator and Demolition"albums that he recorded with Judas Priest. He did not share in the songwriting process when he was in Priest and he had some big boots to fill.Had Ripper been involved in the songwriting process, perhaps the 2 studio albums he recorded with Priest would have fared better. But then again, how can anyone replace the "Metal God"himself,Rob Halford? Coming into Iced Earth may have been easier for Owens because he did not really have a tough act to follow.Matt Barlow may have been a popular vocalist but he certainly was not in Halford's league.Besides,The Ripper is a much better vocalist. It is his screams that make Iced Earth sound much heavier. Many people complain that Owens is a Halford clone, but he only sounds like Rob when he hits the high notes. When he sings lower,he has a voice all his own. And the man can write songs,as evidenced by "Red Baron/Blue Max and his new band "Beyond Fear" whose debut album is the way "Demolition" should have sounded. Some Iced Earth fans have put down "The Glorious Burden"because of it's historical and patriotic themes.I guess they were expecting "Something Wicked 2". Don't worry,IE will most likely return to more familiar territory on the next disc, but give "Glorious Burden" a chance.I guarantee that it will blow your speakers. It f#*kin ROCKS.It will definately blow out the windows in the car parked next you. | | Iced Earth Night Of The Stormrider CD (1992)
Glorious Burden
$12.75 Florida's Iced Earth were swimming against the tide in 1992. At a time when alternative rock was wiping the rock & roll slate clean and putting hundreds of heavy metal bands out of business, seemingly overnight, the band's uncompromising blend of classic metaland thrash (think Iron Maiden meets Slayer) was about as unfashionable as it got. And, to make matters worse, their sophomore effort, Night of the Stormrider, was a full-blown concept album about a man's fall from grace and subsequent questioning of organized religion. Guitarist and principal songwriter Jon Shaffer went to great lengths to diversify the band's already complex sonic palette, adding acoustic guitar passages and atmospheric keyboards to outstanding cuts like "Angel's Holocaust," "Before the Vision," "Pure Evil," and the awesome "Desert Rain." New vocalist ...
| | Iced Earth Burnt Offerings CD (1995)
Glorious Burden
$13.85 After a four-year absence, which, in retrospect, actually spared them from the abuse suffered by most metal bands during the peak years of alternative rock, Iced Earth returned to action with 1995's Burnt Offerings. Known for their uncompromising defense of epic classic metal, the band gets right back to work with the elaborate title track's surprising mix of soft piano tinklings, chorused vocals, double kick drums, and crushing guitars. Remarkably, it all seems to work, and while his ultra-dramatic vocal style occasionally verges on the absurd, resourceful new vocalist Matthew Barlow ultimately carries the day on such standout tracks as "Creator Failure" and "Brainwashed." Then, just when you thought things couldn't get any more grandiose, the band embarks upon the ponderous, 16-minute trilogy (something which would become a tradition for concluding subsequent releases) that is "Dante's Inferno" -- a piece of daunting complexity that will no doubt terrify as many as it delights. Still, classic metal has often been about pomp anyway, and this is what Iced Earth is all about, take ...
| | Iced Earth Something Wicked This... CD (1998)
Glorious Burden
$14.05 Released in 1998, Something Wicked This Way Comes offers Iced Earth virtually replicating their previous effort, The Dark Saga, but with somewhat less inspired results. "Burning Times," "Stand Alone," and "My Own Savior" are fine slabs of the classic metal/thrash metal combination the band has become known for, but they lack the spark of yesteryear. "1776" ...

American power metal's last hope returns with a monumentally complex, full-octane fan-boy-driven concept album. Fear not, the pummeling thrash chords of old still remain, while Paul Stanley's -- er, Matt Barlow's -- vocals still crackle with molten energy and untapped emotional well. Leaders Jon Schaffer and Larry ...

Her signature heartfelt sincerity shines through in beautiful ballads like "Here's To Us" and the unforgettable poignant title track. Yet "Higher Ground" reveals a fresh, contemporary side of Tania. From the first muscular acoustic riffs of the opening track Yee Ha! to the rockin' "Harley McTaggart" and the catchy 30 Something" it's undeniable how bristling with lust for life this new record ...
