It appears as though no matter what the "flavor of the month" may be on radio or MTV, there will always be a die-hard cult fan base for progressive metal. Popularized by the likes of Dream Theater, the style incorporates the tricky bits of such groups as Yes along with the metallic muscle of Iron Maiden. The top Finnish export is Stratovarius. 2005 saw the release of a self-titled studio album, which shows that the group is still following their original musical path. While the album will undoubtedly please those already converted, to others outside the group's fanatical circle, you can't help but smirk a bit at such Spinal Tap-worthy song titles as "Maniac Dance," "Fight!!!," and "The Land of Ice and Snow," or singer Timo Kotipelto's equal parts Bruce Dickinson and Sebastian Bach vocals. That said, Stratovarius is one of the few prog metal acts that actually puts songwriting ahead of mere shredding and noodling, as evidenced by quite a few tracks on Stratovarius -- including "Just Carry On." ~ Greg Prato

Kim Bendix Petersen, better known as King Diamond, has built an empire out of wailing spirits, singing spiders, and voodoo priestesses. His 11th full-length ghost story, The Puppet Master, centers around an unfortunate man, his girlfriend, and a husband and wife team of puppet masters as they abuse and torture their subjects somewhere in Budapest. Diamond wisely forgoes his usual cheeseball spoken-word intro and simply launches into "Midnight," a melodic dirge that ranks high amongst his huge -- and often inconsistent -- body of work. The brutal "Emerencia" features stellar guitar work from Andy LaRocque -- the thread that binds each and every King Diamond album -- and "The Ritual" aptly deals with the popular heavy metal theme of souls burning in Hell -- lyrical prowess has never been his forte. The remainder of the record is serviceable goth-metal filled with oaths and omens, blood and sacrifice, and one ill-conceived Christmas song. King Diamond has reached a stage in his career where evil has begun to fade into novelty, and The Puppet Master resonates with a dark giddiness that suits a man with face paint and a cape nearing his fifties. With their second album, 2004's ironically titled Another Great Love Song, Ludicra took immediate steps to broaden their sound and confound anyone inclined to pigeonhole them as a straight-up black metal band. Such limiting accusations may have been somewhat applicable to their first effort, two years earlier, but versatile new songs like "The Only Cure, the Only Remedy" and "Time Wounds All Heels" constantly shuffle savage black metal in with more "civilized" doses of goth melody, progressive tendencies, stark acoustic strummings, and dense electric guitar orchestrations. The latter inevitably lead one to conclude that guitarist John Cobbett, of the Lord Weird Slough Feg and Hammers of Misfortune cult legend, is stepping up his involvement in Ludicra's songwriting and arranging process, but only short-sighted black metal purists are likely to care, and even their needs are suitably served by uniformly vicious offerings like "One Thousand Wolves" and the hardcore-fast "In the Greenest Maze."
