Clannad: Maire Ni Bhraonain, Pol O Braonain, Ciaran O Braonain, Padraig O Dugain, Noel O Dugain. Engineers: Martin Pearson, Ron Kurz, Louis Austin. Digitally remastered from original 1/4" master tapes. Features bonus tracks and new remixes. 1985's Macalla is one of Clannad's strongest albums. The songs are mainly mid-tempo or slower, and combine the poignant beauty of Irish balladry with the immediacy of a rock band line-up. Traditional Irish instruments come and go, along with touches of sax and on "In a Lifetime," soulful guest vocals by fellow Irishman Bono, of U2. Macalla is a well-rounded album of melodic folk pop, infused with that beautiful warm sadness that seems to pervade Irish music and culture. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats In signing to RCA Records in 1982, Clannad switched gears from traditional Celtic folk to more mainstream-oriented pop. 1985's MACALLA features both pop compositions and examples of Clannad's innovative, reverb-drenched ambient style. The opening "Caislean Oir" is a lush vocal choir piece. The song, interpreted much like a Renaissance chant--with a distinct Celtic flair, of course--resonates with deep emotion. "Closer to Your Heart" and "Almost Seems (Too Late to Turn)" are particularly memorable. The electric guitar solo on the former shows off the superb skill of special guest Anton Drennan. Maire Brennan's vocal comes across as particularly inspired as she sings, "time will heal all your troubles away." But MACALLA's most moving song may be "In a Lifetime." U2's Bono sits in on this track, contributing an extremely passionate vocal performance.
