THE COLLECTION is a 17-track release by blues, gospel, jazz and reggae act Sounds of Blackness and includes "Gonna Be Free One Day" and "I'm Going All The Way."
The new jack-meets-gospel production style of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis helped Sounds of Blackness place three singles ("Optimistic," "The Pressure," "Testify") from 1991's Evolution of Gospel high on the pop charts, and truthfully, that album still stands as the best introduction to the Sounds of Blackness collective. Which is not meant to disparage anthologies such as this one, which collects all three of the big hits as well as interesting revisits to Sly Stone's "You Can Make It if You Try" and Gamble & Huff's "Love Train," but as a group dedicated to presenting the full spectrum of African-American music, Sounds of Blackness got it exactly right on Evolution of Gospel. After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more.
