Returning to his solo career after Deacon Blue's short-lived late-'90s reunion, Ricky Ross shows on 2003's This Is the Life that the differences between Deacon Blue and his solo material are minimal at best. After the hushed acoustic opener, "Northern Soul" (which musically bears no resemblance to the Wigan scene at all), the album quickly moves into more familiar territory for Ross, with songs like the Prefab Sprout-style lush, jangly pop of "London Comes Alive" and the Edwyn Collins-like cod soul of "Nothing Cures That" sounding like they could have come off of any of Deacon Blue's albums. The arrangements, by producer and multi-instrumentalist Davie Scott, are '70s-style slick without sounding sterile and over-produced and, as always, the focus is entirely on Ross' smooth vocals. Deacon Blue fans will enjoy This Is the Life, but those resistant to that band's charms will find absolutely nothing new here. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Eurythmics Peace CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
This Is The Life songs
$8.49 After releasing 1989's WE TOO ARE ONE, Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox took a break from Eurythmics in order to pursue outside projects. During their time apart in the '90s, Lennox released two solo albums while Stewart wrote songs and produced other people, composed scores, and fronted the Spiritual Cowboys. On their first record in a decade, Eurythmics return with a collection of lush pop tracks caressed by Annie Lennox's sultry vocals flowing over Dave Stewart's enthralling studio arrangements.
The mood struck on the Eurythmics' ninth studio album is one of warm, organic ambiance akin to William Orbit's work with Madonna. Songs such as the airy "17 Again" (which finds Lennox cleverly referencing their hit "Sweet Dreams") and the Burt Bacharach-flavored "I Saved the World Today" are sophisticated, unpretentious pop compositions light years beyond the band's early synth-pop work. Balancing out PEACE's sedate moments are such up-tempo tracks as the wah-wah guitar-driven "Power to the Meek" and the equally rocking "I Want It All," a track punctuated by Lennox's exuberant whoops. One of the most triumphant moments on PEACE is "Forever," a sweeping number wrapped in a George Martin-inspired orchestral arrangement straight off a late-period Beatles album.
Nearly a decade after ...

| | Bill Cosby It's True! It's True! CD (1969)
This Is The Life CD music
$9.79 Bill Cosby concluded his five-year (1964-1969) run with Warner Brothers -- which yielded no less than eight Top 40 spoken word comedy long-players -- with It's True! It's True! (1969). If the written copy on the rear LP jacket is to be taken at face value, the material on this roughly half-hour platter consists of spontaneous and extemporaneous items that Cosby "winged" during a run at Harrah's Casino in Lake Tahoe, NV. Concurrent with his scheduled performances -- in early 1968 -- the Reno Musicians' Union went on strike. While the artist would make the occasional references to his childhood memories, Cosby's repertoire had expanded considerably. Decidedly mature themes began emerging as early as Revenge (1967) -- particularly with "Wives" -- and the motif continued as To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With (1968) on the shorter pieces "Conflict" and "The Apple." In fact, the opening selection is more or less a continuation of the latter title as "It's All the Women's Fault" delves into similar territory as he playfully chides the fairer sex about their responsibility and roles in the process -- dating all the way back to Eve. Of the numerous shorter monologues, Cosby's observations on "Helicopters" is among the best of the bunch as he proffers an alternative for those who might suffer from the fear of being able to see "where you're going to crash." The solution is ...
