(1 Customer Review)
If there's one thing listeners have learned about the solo projects of Yes members (or former Yes members), it's that no one should expect their solo output to be a carbon copy of Close to the Edge or Fragile. That has been true of Chris Squire and Alan White; it is also true of Steve Howe, whose solo projects have ranged from Yes-minded to not so Yes-minded. This 2003 release finds a 56-year-old Howe leading a five-man group called Remedy, which unites the guitarist/singer with two of his sons (keyboardist Virgil Howe and drummer Dylan Howe) as well as saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and bassist Derrick Taylor. Far from an exact replica of Yes, the versatile Remedy has a progressive rock orientation but also gets into everything from bluesy folk-rock ("Where I Belong") to instrumental jazz fusion ("Westwinds," "Pacific Haze"). Steve Howe, quite frankly, has always been a much better guitarist than singer; he's a superb musician, but merely an adequate vocalist. And the fact that Elements contains an abundance of instrumentals -- some fusion, some progressive rock -- is a definite plus. Giving Howe a chance to stretch out and display his virtuosity as a guitarist certainly isn't a bad thing. For that matter, Howe handles himself nicely on the mandolin, dobro, and dulcimer, all of which he plays as secondary instruments. Saying that Howe is merely an adequate singer isn't saying that he shouldn't sing at all. A vocalist doesn't need a fantastic range to offer something meaningful -- Madonna, like Chet Baker, has often excelled despite her technical limitations as a singer -- and when Howe does sing on this CD, he successfully gets his points across. Elements isn't among Howe's essential solo efforts, but it's a decent, respectable outing that deserves credit for its diversity. ~ Alex Henderson

$6.35 It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided to continue with a new vocalist and keyboardist. It was even more surprising when the new members turned out to be Trevor Horn (later a famed pop producer) and Geoff Downes (who would soon depart with Steve Howe for Asia). And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA ...

$6.39 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet ...

$13.95 True believers in the prog rock gospel don't really need to know anything about this disc beyond the fact that it's a solo album by Yes, Asia, and GTR alumnus Steve Howe. Prog rock agnostics will be a bit more wary, but may take comfort from the power-trio instrumentation and from the presence of bassist Tony Levin, who is the very Buddha of taste and professionalism. Between the stripped-down format and the presence of Levin, it would be reasonable to expect that things are going to stick pretty close to the ...
| | Hot Chocolate Every 1'S A Winner CD (1987)
Elements
$8.85 Hot Chocolate may never be included on the roster of heavy-hitting funk bands, but they were certainly a valuable part of the U.K.'s contribution to the genre. Able to bounce around and blend styles which ranged from funk-lite to pure pop and disco, Hot Chocolate gave the U.K. and then the States a string of chart hits and club favorites throughout the 1970s and into the '80s. Hot Chocolate's reign in England began in 1969 with their cover of John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance," and continued on with some of the early '70s most stylish soul/funk compositions. However, they didn't register in the U.S. until 1974's "Emma" gave them their first Stateside hit. Heavy on post-1975 material, this compilation is a nice summary of the band's U.S. career, but doesn't pay sufficient tribute to the truly great band they were beforehand. From the pure pop-funk of "You Sexy Thing," which gave the band their first Top Five pop hit in the U.S., and early favorites "So You Win Again" and the gospel-tinged ballad "I'll Put You Together Again," to the latter day classic "Are You Getting Enough Happiness," Every 1's A Winner doesn't miss a beat. Where the disc is better, then, is across the excellent pre-1975 tracks. The sinisterly impassioned and politically charged "Brother Louie" is probably one of the best songs the band recorded. Also of note is 1970's outstanding "Love Is Life," one of several songs which authors Errol Brown and Tony Wilson originally envisioned giving to Herman's Hermits. Using this compilation as a yardstick, Hot Chocolate would seem to defy any real categorization, a portrait which is grossly unfair. Anybody searching for a true representation, then, would be better served seeking out a European collection, where the emphasis is on the entire career. ~ Amy Hanson
Hot Chocolate enjoyed an enthusiastic following in England, but in the U.S., the British band didn't receive nearly as much exposure as it should have. Regrettably, Hot Chocolate only had two major hits in the U.S.: "You Sexy Thing" in 1975 and "Every 1's a Winner" in 1978. That rock-influenced soul gem is the opener on the group's fourth album, which is also titled Every 1's a Winner. Although none of the other songs on this LP were big hits in the U.S., most of them are quite solid -- and that includes the moving ballad "Sometimes It Hurts to Be a Friend" as well as the message song "Love Is the Answer One More Time" and the moody Euro-disco number "Put Your Love in Me." This is a soul-funk album first and foremost, but it's a soul-funk album that isn't afraid to draw on British pop/rock influences like David Bowie and Elton John. Nor were Hot Chocolate afraid to incorporate Afro-Caribbean influences -- "Confetti ...
