Burning Earth
$13.05 Hammerfall's grandiose heavy metal posturing only narrowly avoids the type of self-parody exhibited by Manowar (for that matter, the bandmembers' outfits are only slightly less ridiculous than Manowar's swords-and-loincloths look). But fans of the genre probably won't care -- the band performs its soaring power metal anthems with spirit, dedication, and heroic execution on Crimson Thunder. This is pure classicism here; Hammerfall devotedly adheres to the genre guidelines of '80s power metal, without any attempts toward innovation. Includes an inspired cover version of Chastain's obscure "Angel of Mercy" and a rather pointless take on Kiss' already overdone "Detroit Rock City." ...
| | Dream Evil Evilized CD (2003)
Burning Earth
$9.75 Evilized is a shameless record, celebrating sacred heavy metal conventions with both passion and a touch of parody. Dream Evil still plays '80s-style power metal with plenty of soaring choruses and fancy fretwork, but they've dropped the Dungeons & Dragons lyrics in favor of songs about the genre itself. The use of lyrical clichés is inspired and witty in this context; singer Niklas Isfeldt's macho boasts of being "so f*cking metal" are self-consciously hilarious yet genuine enough to avoid condescension. Guitarist Gus G. delivers a batch of straightforward, biting riffs to fit Isfeldt's earnest sentiment, and together these two elements make these accessible metal songs more engaging than anything on their heavy-handed debut. Some purists will not enjoy the moments of absurdity, but that's to be expected. What those listeners might want to consider is that despite poking fun at heavy metal's clichés, Dream Evil is intensely loyal to their craft. Countless metal songs have been written about breaking chains and the minions of the night, but by embracing these tired song ...

Burning Earth
$11.49 If jazz can have its Young Lions -- hard bop and post-bop improvisers who came along in the '80s, '90s, or 2000s but faithfully adhere to the straight-ahead jazz of the '40s, '50s, and '60s -- there is no reason why metal shouldn't have its neo-classicist movement. And in fact, metal does have such a movement: the power metal revival movement. Just as the Young Lions of jazz worship at the alter of Clifford Brown, Sonny Stitt, and Art Blakey's long list of Jazz Messengers, the power metal revival bands that emerged in the '90s and 2000s have their own golden era to worship -- and that era is the '70s (when power metal got started) and '80s (when power metal became even more plentiful). Firewind's Forged by Fire is a 2004 recording that worships the '70s and '80s (especially the '80s) without apology, drawing on classic influences like Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensrÿche. Totally oblivious to alternative metal, rap-metal, death metal/black metal, and metalcore, Forged by Fire has all of the familiar power metal elements -- larger than life lyrics, a very big sound, and bright, shiny guitars (as opposed to the downtuned, chugging ...

$16.45 Emerging bright amongst the next generation of shining stars are two young artists, Yung DOE and Dev. This one-two punch from Columbus, Ohio, is a leading factor to give hip-hop and R&B what it has been missing. Their sound sets itself apart from the others with clever melodies and catchy hooks. Both, at such a young age, already have their sights set on success. A natural born performer, at the age of 8 Yung DOE began writing and performing his own rap songs. Yung DOE, is a gifted actor, performer and rapper in his own right. Following in the footsteps of his father, Yung DOE learned to play several instruments beginning with the drums and moving on to the bass and keyboards. Yung DOE did not stop there, at age 12; he would go to different studios around the county, (with his father), during the summer school break, where he learned how to engineer. Yung DOE has had the opportunity to sit in on several major recording sessions. His most memorable was in Cleveland, Ohio with mega producer Edwin "Tony" Nicholas. Yung DOE learned many techniques about engineering as well as production. By age 13, Yung DOE was composing, producing and mixing his own material. He has compiled several hundred songs, selling his own records at various clubs and stores in Columbus, Ohio. This entrepreneur understands the business of music as well as the business of making music. Being born straight into music, from playing instruments to being in plays DEV was born to perform. At the age of 10, DEV decided he wanted to be a musician. He started out playing instruments, from the saxophone to the drums and then going on to writing music. With his face in the television watching famous performers he decided that's what he wanted to be a songwriter. At the age of 13 DEV began to pursue his dream by going place-to-place ...
