Rising from the ashes of Depeche Mode and Yaz, Erasure were formed by Vince Clarke, a former stalwart of both bands. Buoyed by a new remix of "Oh L'Amour" and a bonus megamix CD, HITS! ups the ante from their previous best-of collection, 1992's ERASURE POP! The latter portion of the record contains arguably less exclamatory fare from their mid-to-late '90s records. However, standout tracks from that period like "Freedom" and "In My Arms," as well as the bulk of their Abba covers compilation and a rendition of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" serve as a nice complement to the set's first half, which is frontloaded with the usual '80s classics like "A Little Respect" and "Chains Of Love."
An early track record of releasing one glistening single after another made Erasure's first compilation, Erasure Pop!: The First 20 Hits, a no-brainer to compile, but what to do with the duo's spotty later years? Starting soft and staying there, Nightbird takes more than a couple listens to pay real dividends, but that Erasure are revitalized is evident first time through. Gone is the trying-too-hard surface-pop of Cowboy and Other People's Songs and back is the intimate, introspective, and great lyrical moments of the ballads scattered among the duo's best albums. Song after song displays that lead singer Andy Bell has grown remarkably as a writer. His vivid tales of isolation and painful regret don't have that Morrissey sting in the tail, but they're just as good for weepy evenings and are just as honest/cathartic as anything the Mozz has written.
