Cylobotnia
$11.39 10th Rel;French House+Techno
Personnel includes: Delia (vocals); Philippe Nadaud (flute). More complex and idiosyncratic than his previous full-length works (and much less danceable as a consequence), Unreasonable Behaviour focuses on midtempo jams in the verge between evocative techno, electro-jazz, and even melancholy synth-pop. If 1997's 30 was his Chicago album, this one is definitely ...
| | Carl Craig Onsumothasheeat CD (2001)
Cylobotnia
$9.69 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Carl Craig. Includes liner notes by Carl Craig. Invited to construct a mix album from the rather thin back catalog of Shadow Records, Carl Craig almost proves up to the task, finally drafting several imports from his own Planet E label to finish the job. Though Shadow exists mainly to release the domestic versions of full-lengths by a few European producers, Craig sifts through the scattershot discography and deftly outlines his continuing meld of academic techno and earthier jazz. He opens with a great track by Jimpster, one of his closest fellow fusionaires, then looks to the Detroit-connected John Arnold for the drum-heavy "Universal ...
| | Richard Devine Lipswitch CD (2001)
Cylobotnia
$10.29 It's familiar terrain. As soon as the lights are dimmed, the microscopes pulled out, electronic music is instantly shushed by the bystanders, who are waiting, hoping, and eager to better figure out just what makes it twitch and click the way it does. It's how Richard Devine sees the world and unfortunately it's not much. Defiantly paddling about in Autechre's and Aphex Twin's ...
| | Swayzak Fabric 11 CD (2003)
Cylobotnia
$15.05 Swayzak: James Taylor, David Brown. This is part of Fabric's Fabric series. Right from the start, Swayzak's 2003 contribution to the Fabric mix series makes a concerted attempt to separate itself from the production crew's 2002 contribution to the Groovetechnology mix series. While a handful of this disc's inclusions have the familiar slinky rhythm-pulse, the keyboard-generated vapor-trail coating, and little else in the way of decoration, most of the tracks lean toward oddball strains of house that don't have a whole lot in common with Swayzak's own sleek work of late. Since Taylor and Brown aren't exactly the world's best DJs, the actual selections play an increased role. Trainspotters will balk at the lack of surprises and unearthed gems; tracks from Akufen, Luomo, Felix da Housecat, and LCD Soundsystem ("Losing My Edge": the "Detachable Penis" ...
| | Lfo Sheath CD (2003)
Cylobotnia
$15.19 Once a duo, LFO, at the time of the release of SHEATH, was a one-man show, namely, producer Mark Bell. Only his third album over a 14-year period, SHEATH is unmistakably the work of its maker, updated for a new century. Bell strikes some retro poses--early-1990s-era blips and beeps abound--but one also gets the sense that he is hyper-aware of the sounds' significance--the history behind what he is creating. Whether on the ethereal "Blown," the menacing "Unafraid to Linger," or the buzzing "Sleepy Chicken," he still displays a sure knack for dynamically and tastefully arranging a track. And, with its computer-voiced lead, "Freak" calls to mind the 1991 single "We Are Back," and serves to remind of LFO's--and Bell's--significant contributions to techno's development. The most anticipated record of the year for fans of British techno, LFO's Sheath is another masterpiece from the pen of Mark Bell, though much of it sounds cobbled together ...

| | Kitchen Cynics Parallel Dog Days CD (2003)
Cylobotnia
$13.35 The artist behind Kitchen Cynics is actually Scottish singer/songwriter Alan Davidson, who had recorded obscure cassettes, singles, and albums for 15 years before Parallel Dog Days, his debut U.S. release. The record's very much in the revivalist acid folk mold, though with a gentler, more tuneful, and wittier touch than many other releases of the sort from the early 21st century bore. It's also very influenced by the likes of Tom Rapp (there's even a track titled "Tune for Tom Rapp"), early Pink Floyd at their folkiest, Robyn Hitchcock at his less plugged-in, and the airy fantasia landscapes of British acid folkies like Donovan and the Incredible String Band. Both ...
| | Unai Digital Disco 3 CD (2006)
Cylobotnia
$14.09 DJ: Unai. Audio Mixers: Andreas Schorpp; Karlsruhe. Photographer: Michael Hohmann. After the fall of Force Tracks at the turn of the millennium, the hole left by its implosion was filled by hundreds of labels aspiring to be the next King Bee of the microhouse/glitch community. Many came close, but never quite measured up to the quality and quantity of Force Tracks releases. With the label's return in 2006, many of the names that built that empire have left for other labels and some have quit producing altogether. But the class that label owner Achim ...
