This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by George Acosta.
Named after George Acosta's hometown, Miami is another satisfying release from the prolific trance DJ. Acosta differentiates himself from the competition by playing it fairly straight, never reaching for that over-the-top record that will be embarrassing a year later. The first disc doesn't demand full attention, but for a hard-driving selection of background music, it works. Sunny without a cloud in sight, Acosta blends the tunes so well it's hard to separate the 13 tracks. The second disc is a definite change, more dark and noisy. Miss Loony's "Superbitch" and Mass in Orbit's "Power Is Your Mind" are both rather nocturnal with stops and starts that help muddy things up a bit. It makes for a bumpier ride than the first disc, but for any kind of active listening it's much more rewarding. He'll never be accused of being an innovator, but few trance DJs are as reliable. ~ David Jeffries

Miami album
$19.55 Those who got hooked by Amy Denio's singing on the Science Group's first album, A Mere Coincidence, may be disappointed at first by Spoors. But the all-instrumental sibling has a lot to offer in terms of complex, rehearsal-heavy avant-prog rock. Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer is still the mastermind of the project, his precise compositions posing a double challenge to rock musicians: the virtuosity, of course, but also the capability of turning these intellectual constructions (very close in form to contemporary music) into a music that conveys the drive of rock & roll. Well, the quartet pulls it off with brio. Helping out the keyboardist are bassist Bob Drake, drummer Chris Cutler, and Thinking Plague leader and guitarist Mike Johnson, whose work here pulls the music even closer to the Plague/5uu's/Motor Totemist Guild axis. The 15 tracks are organized into four loose suites. The three "Timelines" tunes ...
| | Esther Phillips Home Is Where The Hatred Is: The Kudu Years 1971-1977 CD (2004)
Miami CD music
$17.75 The Rhino double-CD The Best of Esther Phillips (1962-1970) covered the period that most would agree was the singer's most artistically successful. As an 18-song disc that covers the period immediately following what was documented on the Rhino collection, Home Is Where the Hatred Is: The Kudu Years 1971-1977 is a valuable supplement for those who want more. However, as was the case with another idiosyncratic soul-pop singer who moved to CTI in the 1970s (Nina Simone), Phillips' '70s output was decidedly inferior to her '60s work, even if her vocal skills remained intact. It's respectable enough 1970s soul, with a slicker and funkier feel than her earlier sides, in keeping with the trends sweeping the world of R&B during the decade, getting into disco on her 1975 hit "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes." But while several major writers are covered on the songs selected for this anthology -- Marvin Gaye, Allen Toussaint, Bill Withers, Joe Cocker, Jackie DeShannon, Gil Scott-Heron, and Gene McDaniels -- not many of the selections are above average, leaving the most distinctive thing about them Phillips' odd if appealing pinched, slinky vocal tone. Songs really are necessary to raise singers who rely on cover material to a higher level, and the shortage of ace numbers is what separates Phillips' '70s records from those of someone like, say, Gladys Knight. The record's only disappointing, however, in that it doesn't show Phillips at the point where she was getting the most out of her abilities in the studio. It's mildly likable period '70s soul for the most part, if dull in places. ~ Richie Unterberger
Only comprehensive compilation of Esther Phillips outstanding work for CTI/Kudu during the 1970s - featuring tracks from all seven albums produced by Creed Taylor. Includes the US R&B hits "From a ...
| | Big Country Bluegrass My Old Virginia Home CD (2008)
Miami music CDs
$16.45 While many bluegrass groups deliver lively vocal and instrumental performance and artistry, none has the native born talent that you’ll hear on this fifth release of Big Country Bluegrass on the Hay Holler label. Big Country Bluegrass, founded by Tommy and Teresa Sells14 years ago, delivers obviously heartfelt reverence for the traditions, life themes and faith of Appalachian people, and more specifically Blue Ridge mountain people.Longing for home and family is present in Teresa’s lead singing on “I’m Longing For My Old Virginia Home,” ...

| | Earl Hines 1953-1954 CD (2007)
Miami album
$18.05 The 11th installment in the Classics Earl Hines chronology charts the pianist and bandleader's professional progress during a time period running between May 1953 and August 1954. This entertaining segment of the Hines story includes eight excellent sides cut for the King label in New York, 14 selections recorded in Los Angeles for the Nocturne label, and lastly a five-and-a-half minute interview with Hines himself. The four King instrumentals ("Hot Soup," "Sleep Walking," "In the Attic," and "Space Ship") demonstrate how adaptable Hines was during these transitional years. This compilation opens with two surprisingly fine and funny vocals by world-famous pugilist Sugar Ray Robinson, while "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" and "When I Dream of You" are sung by 30-year-old crooner Johnny Hartman. "Crazy Rhythm" was done up by four members of the band (including trombonist Dicky ...
