Third full-length album features 13 tracks produced by Bill Korecky (Mushroom head, Keehaul) at Mars studio. Abacus. 2003.
It's funny how a vocalist can make or break a band. Narcissus' Crave and Collapse has a number of intriguing things happening instrumentally, coming off like a prog-leaning amalgam of Tool and Deftones -- but when singer John Pope strays from his constipated hardcore howl and unleashes a perpetually off-key and strained wail (particularly painful: "Indifference of Living," "Division of the Figureheads," "Talented Prey, Weak Hunter"), one bad ingredient spoils an otherwise moderately flavorful broth. The other problem with this Ohio-based band's third full-length effort is the infiltration of a similar mid-tempo slog throughout, resulting in a blur of many compelling individual instrumental chunks, but with no songs really standing out -- although the occasional solid groove and riff sometimes dethrone the band's obsession with overly complex arrangements -- "To James" and "Blessed Coma" -- which trade off clean guitar arpeggios and odd time signatures with straightforward grooves and power-chorded riffs. Although bands in the U.S. hardcore scene who attempt to stretch the boundaries of a maddening meat-and-potatoes genre -- and Narcissus does possess a more intellectual, sometimes psychological, approach to lyrics and songwriting -- should be welcomed with open arms, Crave and Collapse, over the course of 13 tracks and 61 minutes, seems to falter under the weight of its own ambition. Especially when it comes to Pope, who apparently thinks his voice is powerful and elastic; maybe someone should tell him otherwise. ~ John Serba

Crave And Collapse album
$11.89 Consider this the true follow-up to Burnt by the Sun's hugely promising self-titled debut EP. This is the group's second full-length, following 2002's Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution, an album that was widely acclaimed yet still somewhat disappointing to some fans of the more experimental, grindcore-leaning EP. Soundtrack found the band reorienting to a sort of all-American, middle-of-the-road hardcore-metal fusion that, while still fairly heavy, seemed tame in comparison to that earlier release. Lyrically, it also came off as preachy and pedantic in spots. This disc remedies those problems, though. Musically, it falls somewhere between the EP and Soundtrack, merging melodic, groove-heavy metalcore with streaks of dissonant grindcore and Morbid Angel-worthy death metal. The songs in general flow better here than on the last album, with highlights "Battleship," "Forlani," and "Washington Tube Steak" exploding with riff after memorable, well-placed riff. Another standout, ...

Crave And Collapse songs
$5.39 Even amidst the already seedy underbelly of the late-'80s L.A. glam metal scene, L.A. Guns were the undisputed bottom-feeders. A ragged collection of outcasts from various other bands (guitarist Tracii Guns was the original "guns" in Guns n' Roses, drummer Steven Riley had recently vacated the stool with shock-kings W.A.S.P., and British vocalist Phil Lewis had done time with London glamsters Girl), they elevated the unrepentant sleaziness and undeniable tackiness of their environment to a new VD-encrusted low. The union of such an unsavory cast of characters could only result in a wildly over-the-top rock & roll album, and while it may not have been as successful as their latest efforts, ...

Crave And Collapse music CDs
$16.45 Sharon Rae North’s mother once told her, “No matter what you do on the outside, you’re a singer on the inside.”This talented songstress sings jazz (straight-ahead, contemporary, smooth, etc.) and standards. Though, she often adds in some jazz versions of R&B and Top 40 hits. Her first commercial CD released in October 2007. “Sassy, sensual, soulful and spectacular…Nina Simone with a little bit of Della and Ella tossed in for color,” is how Jazz DJ Carmen Brown of 98.3 WDLT-FM [Mobile, AL] describes the vocals of Sharon Rae North on her new smooth jazz CD “The Way You Make Me Feel”. It has already received a glowing review from www.Jazzreview.com.Producer/Arranger, Vic Smiley’s familiarity with North’s voice and style resulted in pinpoint accuracy in accommodating what reviewer Nina Goodrich of Jazzreview.com describes as …”a smooth delivery punctuated with impeccable timing and firm control over the flowing notes.”For this project Ohio-born, now Atlanta-based, Sharon Rae North recruited a group of stellar musicians to create a CD that Goodrich predicts “will rate high on the charts, crossing jazz, pop, Soul, R&B and find a home with hip listeners everywhere.” Her accompanists include Vic Smiley on guitar; Niles McKinney, keyboardist for the late Gerald Levert; background vocals by Melvin Sephus of The Rude Boys and Jon Roberts on bass. Sharon also has opened for major artists, such as Patti LaBelle. She was tapped to sing the National Anthem before an audience of thousands during the annual 4th of July celebration at the Double-A, 5-Diamond Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia, which is recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as “one of the best places in the world to stay.” She has headlined at numerous events, including the 2006 Summer Concert Series in Durham, NC. Sharon has worked with Joel “Razor Sharp” Johnson, keyboard player for funk-masters Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, piano virtuoso Frank “Buzz” Amato, who accompanied Curtis Mayfield for many years, pianist Walter Bland, the only musician listed on the soundtrack of the HBO series Oz. Walter also has written scores for PBS shows and NPR programs. Others include, drummer Jimmy “Junebug” Jackson, who played with jazz great Jimmy Smith for nearly two decades, keyboard player Keith “Keecho” Rawls, who played for Peabo Bryson and for the UniverSoul Circus, and keyboardist Danny Jackson, who has produced for Grammy winning artist India.Arie. She also has worked with Michael “Kid Funkadelic” Hampton, lead guitarist for George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic and has done sessions with Clarence “Doctor Bob” Ross, the current saxophone player and back-up singer for the Isley Brothers and music programmer for Chaka Khan, En Vogue, New Edition and many others. She has performed with Jerry “Louie” Poindexter, veteran ...
