SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is an exhilarating, provocative motion picture. The Rolling Stones rehearse their latest song, "Sympathy For the Devil," in a London studio. Beginning as a ballad, the track gradually acquires a pulsating groove, which gets Jagger into a rousing vocal display of soulful emotion that Godard is lucky enough to capture on film. Showing that rock and roll is more than just partying and goofing off, SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is a brilliant portrait of the creative process at its most collaborative and arousing. Jean-Luc Godard's SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is an exhilarating, provocative pastiche of a motion picture. While the focus of the film is on The Rolling Stones song after which the film is titled, a series of abstract fictional vignettes in the second half of the film allows Godard to probe topics as diverse as Black Power, pornography, and the irony of interviewing celebrities. These extended sequences elevate the film above a simple portrait of the English rockers, constructing an intimate examination of the cultural and political movements of the '60s. It is also a fascinating study of the intellectual aesthetic that Godard developed toward the end of the decade.
This film can actually be viewed as two movies in one. In addition to the aforementioned vignettes, the film shows The Rolling Stones in a London studio rehearsing "Sympathy For the Devil," a song that became one of the era's most powerful statements. The band (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman) takes a loose outline of this song and turns it into a stirring, fully realized creation. Beginning as a ballad, the track gradually acquires a pulsating groove, which gets Jagger into a rousing vocal display of soulful emotion that Godard is lucky enough to capture on film. Showing that rock & roll is more than just partying and goofing off, SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is a brilliant portrait of the creative process at its most collaborative and arousing. U.S. Theatrical Release: April 26, 1970.
Filmed on location in London, England.
Jean-Luc Godard initially wanted to capture either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones at work in the studio, but The Beatles turned down his offer, leading him to The Stones, who jumped at the opportunity to work with the renowned director.
Brian Jones was arrested for marijuana possession during the film's production.
Godard makes a brief appearance towards the end of the film, offering drinks and cigarettes to the band. Sympathy For The Devil Reviews: "...The process is amazing....An odd and fascinating piece of musical propaganda."
-- Amy Linden, Entertainment Weekly "...The Stones and their ladies look incredibly cool..."
-- Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]s a memento of both the Stones' genius and 1968's pop-cultural turbulence, Godard's film -- whatever it's called -- is essential art."
-- Mojo Staff, Mojo 3 stars out of 5 -- "Jean Luc Godard's 1968 footage of The Rolling Stones in their swarthy, flamboyant prime is as much a socio-political propaganda piece as it is a rockumentary."
-- Total Film Staff, Total Film "Surprisingly heavy-going, this is part polemic, part rock-music documentary."

Sympathy For The Devil Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Revolutionary Also known as One plus One, this film, which is more of an essay than a movie, juxtaposes two cultures: the productivity of the Stones in their studio to the creativity of revolution in the streets from Marxism to Black Panther Separatism. The film is a paradox in that it calls for an intellectual revolution; one in which the intellectual revolutionary abandons being an intellectual. However, the film exploits revolutionary kitsch for the sake of a cinematic intellectualism, the cultivation of history as a spectacle.

Amazing Rolling Stones documentation The filmed recording sessions for 'Sympathy for the Devil' are a must see! Of course at the time, they couldn't even have imagined just how influential the song still is 35 years later. Don't think that all you'll hear is the familiar album version, either. Seeing a young Keith Richards creating different parts of this epic song is reason enough to own this. The director portrays such an intimacy in the studio, too. They f*ck up, laugh, and start over - only to play brilliant parts that didn't even make it. Truly priceless!!!
The actual film was definately revolutionary and shocking then as well as now. The settings for the vignettes are almost apocalyptically beautiful, littered with graffiti, bloody girls in white, black panthers, guns, sexually poetic narration, etc... A review can't do it justice, so see it for yourself! Submitted by Whitney1313 (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
creation... see the creation of one of the stones' best songs ever-from a vague idea to the classic rocker we all love. perhaps the reiewer from texas who called it "trash" was at home watching the monkees on tv when this movie was being filmed-anyone who calls this 'trash" is neither a stones fan nor very educated about film! $31.25 This documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour has become a legendary, harrowing symbol of the tragic demise of the "Peace and Love" era. After a successful tour across the United States, the Rolling Stones gave a free December concert at Altamont Speedway in California with the Grateful Dead (not seen performing), Ike and Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers (all seen performing one song each). The poorly planned show was fraught with problems from its inception. The band unwisely selected the Hells Angels motorcycle club to provide security, and after the pre-existing chaos was fueled by very visible alcohol and drug abuse, the bikers resorted to violence to keep the stoned, restless, and often naked crowd in line. The result: dozens of injuries and the on-screen stabbing of a young African-American man (during "Sympathy for the Devil," no less) by one of the concert's "staff security."
In a manipulative but effective move, the Maysles brothers and Charlotte Zwerin filmed Mick Jagger ...
