The Klezmer Conservatory Band had been going for well over two decades, but they show no sign of running out of steam or ideas on A Taste of Paradise. By hewing close to the deep heart of klezmer music they often find its core, whether that's in joy (as on "Dem Zeydn's Tants") or an aching melancholy. There's no doubt that they love their past, and in history they find much to bring them pleasure, be it in old music or song. But while they don't push the boundaries of klezmer music as much as some others in the genre, they still do a little nudging at barriers, as on "Bessarabian Breakdown." Mostly, though, as on all their albums, this is a celebration of klezmer and its place in the Jewish soul -- although that soul doesn't have to be religion-based to enjoy this beautiful noise. They're definitely a big band, able to generate a lot of noise when they want, but also scale back to material like "Sabbath Prayer." They continue to grow, not only musically, but also in stature; these days they're simply one of the best. ~ Chris Nickson

Most modern hard rock bands miss the mark by over-emphasizing great riffs and neglecting the importance of complementary vocals. Luckily, such is not the case with Staind, who owe some nods to Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst for career guidance. Durst encouraged vocalist Aaron Lewis to sing more and scream less, which proved to be a key factor in the band's development. The appeal of Staind lies in the purity and fierce emotional integrity of their music, traits seldom seen in heavy rock since Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera ruled the roost.
Lewis's moonlighting as a solo acoustic performer in the band's lean years serves Staind well as BREAK THE CYCLE boasts a well balanced set of thrashy material ("Open Your Eyes" and "Safe Place") offset by more gentle rock ballads ("Fade" and "Suffer"). It is the impact of those ballads that sets Staind apart from their new-metal brethren. The radio-bound "It's Been Awhile" ...

| | Klezmatics Rise Up! CD (2002)
Taste Of Paradise songs
$13.89 One thing about the Klezmatics, they're not afraid of a little controversy with their klezmer music. Here they stir the ashes a couple of times, with an English-Yiddish cover of Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid" that comes twice on the disc, and points out the pitfalls of what people do in the name of religion, and also in "Loshn-Koydesh," an unusual tale of a Hebrew lesson with an appropriately seductive melody to match the words. This time around the emphasis is most definitely on songs, rather than instrumentals, and for the most part they keep their fire quite restrained, rarely letting the instrumental work fly into the stratosphere as they have in the past. Where they do, on "Katz Un Moyz," for example, the results are spectacular, a reminder of how good players like Steven Greenman and Matt Darriau truly are. But Lorin Sklamberg has rarely sounded better singing with the band, as he proves on "Makht Oyf." That said, the annoying chorus of children on "Tepel" overdoes what could be a pleasantly kitschy piece, and highlights the heavy production used on the record, generally to its benefit, but sometimes too heavy-handed. They might be more serious and ...

Taste Of Paradise CD music
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of ...
