When drum'n'bass albums fail -- and they often do -- it's usually either by sounding too much like smooth jazz with polite little skittering beats, or by being too harsh and abrasive. Neil Zarama (a.k.a. Juju) splits the difference nicely between those two pitfalls, offering a mix-CD that keeps things texturally interesting and rhythmically sturdy, without either pushing the listener away, or lulling him to sleep. Part of Juju's secret is the artful inclusion of musical elements from around the world -- notably from Brazil, as demonstrated most impressively on Drumagick's "Sambarock." Jamaica is also represented (on DJ Dara and A-Sides' fine "Unholy Grail," which slides from frantic NYC drum'n'bass into reggae-fied junglism about halfway through the track). Juju's own "Space Vato" is pretty good, but wears out its welcome before the end of its five-minute length; Abstract and Calibre's "Control," though, is presented in an exquisitely clean and complex jungle mix that works beautifully. Seattle's These Arms are Snakes--featuring former members of hardcore bands Kill Sadie and Botch--have mastered the rarefied subgenre of prog-punk, throwing pre-MIDI analog synths together with massive thrash guitars and savage vocals. It's angry and arty and smart. Their second album for Jade Tree is an unrelenting assault, from the opening Led Zep-like stomper "Mescaline Eyes" to the dissonant folk-rock of "Perpetual Bris" (ouch), to the howling insanity of "Crazy Woman Dirty Train."
Don't let the title fool you. There are no bowtie-wearing bunnies, colored eggs, or model families arm-in-arm on their way to Sunday mass to be found on These Arms Are Snakes' sophomore full-length, Easter. ...

Israel Quellet's second album for Sub Rosa is, once more, a mixed bag of short pieces for various instrumentations, going in various directions. The menu includes pieces for: church organ (gothic, gloomy, almost Magma-like), percussion and saturation (extremely noisy but tightly controlled), fitness rower (more rambunctious noise), footsteps and knocks on stairs (very early musique concrète-sounding), and vocals--a distorted recitation accompanied by percussion, organ, and miscellaneous sounds. Despite the diversity in sounds, the album presents a unified musical vision that could be described as dark, solemn, and martial (even the noisier tracks retain a march-like pulse).
