| | Mushroomhead XIII CD Mushroomhead Discography of CDs
(64 Customer Reviews)
Don't let the makeup and masks fool you; while Mushroomhead appear on the surface much like a band of comic book villains, it's obvious that this Ohio octet are serious about their brand of bleak metal. Their previous release, XX, made a quick jump from the indie realm to a major label, and they secure that status with XIII. "Sun Doesn't Rise," "Kill Tomorrow," and "Eternal" feature Pantera-inspired, stop-on-a-dime riffing while "Mother Machine Gun" seems to borrow some swagger from the Cult.
The piano-driven "One More Day" bristles with emotional urgency, while "Nowhere to Go" is reminiscent of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. The heavy use of keyboards sets Mushroomhead apart from the nu-metal pack, and the departure from predominantly rappy vocals shows that the band is clearly evolving. The enhanced content on XIII features Internet links to non-album bonus tracks and other exclusive content.

$6.49 Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with the bass of Mike Starr ...
| | Mushroomhead XX CD (2001)
XIII
$11.99 These wacky Cleveland nu-metal-heads have been wowing Midwest audiences since the early '90s with their masked-men-of-mystery schtick, but XX proves that they're no mere posers. With an intriguing mix of hip-hop, metal, the requisite cookie monster vocals, and most importantly some actual songs (witness "Never Let it Go"), Mushroomhead are set to fill the yawning metal gap currently sparsely inhabited by bands such as Tool.
"Chancre Sore" is blistering metal/hip-hop, while "Before I Die" is festering, synth-laden heavy rock, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
XIII
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness ...
| | Chimaira Impossibility Of Reason CD (2003)
XIII
$13.25 On Chimaira's second full-length album, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, the Midwestern nu-metal outfit charges out of the gate with an electrifying mix of brutally direct Sabbath-esque guitars, the scariest death metal howls this side of Morbid Angel, and double-kick-drum patterns so fast and clean they make Slipknot's drummer sound like the guy who played on "Louie Louie." Unlike many of its similarly hard-edged contemporaries, Chimaira features the added novelty of a full-time member who is credited with "lead electronics." Not simply a DJ, knob-twister Chris Spicuzza adds a distinctive ...
| | Mudvayne Lost And Found CD (2005)
XIII
$8.99 Drummer Matt McDonough and bassist Ryan Martinie play as if they are the same person, tossing off impossibly complex lock-step riffs ("Determined," "Just") like most bands hit an open E chord. On "Happy?" and "Fall into Sleep," singer Chad Gray moves ...

| | Roberta Piket Unbroken Line CD (1997)
XIII
$15.05 Talented young jazz musicians have frequently debuted as leaders on CDs by the Dutch label Criss Cross, as is the case with this outstanding release by pianist Roberta Piket. She's joined by a rhythm section consisting of bassist Mike Formanek and drummer Jeff Williams, along with a front line featuring trumpeter Scott Wendholt and Donny McCaslin, who doubles on tenor and soprano saxes. Piket's chops on her instrument are equal to her considerable abilities as a composer and arranger. The tense post-bop opener, an original titled "Brookland," finds her trading licks with each soloist in turn. Many listeners may not recognize her trio interpretation of Irving Berlin's "Always," which she reharmonized drastically. Piket also shines in her swinging interpretation of Marian McPartland's upbeat ballad "Threnody." Wendholt is superb as he negotiates Piket's challenging composition "Daily Affirmation." Tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson is added for "The End of a Love Affair" and "Some Enchanted Evening" (the second half of a Rodgers and Hammerstein medley), the latter which follows a dark but moving solo piano arrangement of "You'll Never Walk Alone." All in all, this is a promising start for a very gifted ...
| | Baxter CD (1998)

| | Destruction Metal Discharge CD (2003)
XIII
$10.45 Destruction may be one of the progenitors of the German thrash metal movement of the 1980s, but Metal Discharge -- an awful title that unwittingly and humorously implies a particularly painful symptom of some unnamed, fictional disease -- the group's third album since re-forming in 2000, sounds painfully dated and disappointingly one-dimensional. Sure, the toothy riffs come appropriately fast and furious throughout -- always one of Destruction's strong points -- but every song is a borderline-annoying buzz ...
