(10 Customer Reviews)
Amid the early millennial onslaught of emo bands like Saves The Day and Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate differentiated themselves via frontman Andrew McMahon manning a piano instead of the more customary guitar. Their sophomore effort NORTH picks up the heartfelt motives of their debut LEAVING THROUGH THE WINDOW and expands upon them by infusing their emo-soaked inspiration in third-person story-songs. Among the more notable tales included are the foreboding "Me and the Moon," with its opening line "It's a good year for a murderà" and the equally despairing "Break Myself."
Although guitarists Josh Partington and William Tell offer up quite a sea of churning riffs, it's the clean tone of McMahon's piano that gives a patina of gravitas to weighty fare like "Down" and the anthemic "The Runaway." All is not doom and gloom, though, as Something Corporate manages to poke fun at youthful derring-do amid the rugged guitars of "21 and Invincible." With NORTH, Something Corporate easily disproves any talk of a sophomore jinx.
Something Corporate: Andrew McMahon (vocals, piano); Josh Partington, William Tell (guitar); Clutch (bass); Brian Ireland (drums).

Something Corporate North Songs North Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Where is the next album?? This album is one of my favourites of all time, and I still listen to it a lot 3 years later.
The first album, where I can understand people liking it, you can't honestly come to me and tell me it's BETTER than this work of art. It's basically a teeny-punk album, and that's all it'll ever be....but North explores new boundaries, and it has a completely different feel to the music, whislt still retaining the classing SC sound that everyone seems to love so much.
To sum up: Something corporate - used to be OK - now are amazing - matured in their music - buy it. Submitted by lasthidingplace (North Wales) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

pretty good but not as good as the old stuff i like this new something corporate cd but i like the old one, leaving through the window better. leaving through the window has better lyrics and songs. I like the songs space, 21 and invincible, and break myself. they should have more songs like that, but this cd is still worth getting. make sure you pick up a copy of leaving through the window too Submitted by hi (montana) Was This Review Helpful? A Rockin' album Although Something Corporate has been previously dubbed as an “emo/punk” band, the release of this album proves that they are within an undefined genre set a part from many other bands. With a sound related to that of Ben Folds Five with a rock edge, this band has quite a future ahead of them. North may have produced a large amount of diversity in opinion within their fan base…but this album encompasses a well-rounded and versatile band that has matured not only in age, but sound as well. A completely original album with very rockin’ heart-felt tracks, I would recommend this album to anyone. Submitted by buffalogal26 (Fresno, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase North CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Something Corporate Leaving Through The Window CD (2002)
North
$9.99 At heart, Something Corporate find themselves somewhere between the quirky, piano-driven sound of Ben Folds Five and the power pop angst of Marvelous 3 and Semisonic. The bittersweet mid-tempo "Cavanaugh Park" boasts lush, dramatic keyboards, setting a vibe that is almost at odds with the lyrics. "Punk Rock Princess" is as catchy as the song's name would suggest, while the bratty, ...

| | Yellowcard Ocean Avenue CD (2003) Enhanced CD
North
$10.65 Yellowcard's major-label debut is that rarity in latter-day punk-rock--a nuanced, almost subtle collection of distinctive songs with lyrics sensitive enough to reference moonlight, the ocean, and DEATH OF A SALESMAN, amongst its more usual expressions of post-teen angst. (And, by the way, they also have a violinist.) But, far from consigning them to the ranks of the irredeemably nerdy, OCEAN AVENUE is the sound of a young band flexing its imaginative muscle and emerging from behind the one-sound-fits-all sonic shadow of Green Day to produce a singularly distinctive collection of songs.
Sure, the album's opening salvo "Way Away" is straight out of the SoCal punk rock playbook, ...
| | Tesla Into The Now CD (2004)
North
$8.49 Unfairly labeled a hair-metal band, Tesla was always closer to the spirit of vintage 1970s hard rock. When the group released 1994's BUST A NUT, grunge rock was in full swing, and the Sacramento quintet subsequently took their curtain call, keeping busy with low-profile side projects. Testing the waters in 2000, Tesla launched a successful reunion tour, proving the band's enduring appeal. INTO THE NOW stands ...

| | Joe Satriani Is There Love In Space? CD (2004)
North
$7.59 Throughout his career, Joe Satriani has managed that rare trick of inspiring worship by guitar acolytes everywhere, while still managing a modicum of crossover appeal to music fans less interested in the technical aspects of his work. His ninth album, IS THERE LOVE IN SPACE?, continues down that same path of serving both the instrumental aficionado and the casual fan. ...

| | Jovino Santos Neto Roda Carioca (Rio Circle) CD (2006)
North
$14.05 The barriers between classical music, jazz, and indigenous Brazilian music have been obscured by Rio de Janeiro-born and Seattle-based pianist, flutist, and composer Jovino Santos Neto. A member of Hermeto Pascoal's legendary band from 1977 to 1992, Santos Neto has continued to expand on his world music-influenced vocabulary. He later built on his knowledge of Brazilian music during a stint with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim's group, Fourth World, from 1993 until 1997. He also worked with such artists as Mike Marshall, Richard Boukas, Celso Machado, and Chitravina N. Ravikiran. For this lively, multifaceted, and percussive from the get-go collection -- check out the frenetic piano-drum interaction on the opening track, "Estrela do Mar" -- Jovino returned to his hometown, where he recruited some of the country's most impressive performers to contribute. It's fitting that the liner notes feature a glossary of Portuguese cultural and musical terms, because the exciting set plays like a vibrant musical encyclopedia of the musical spirit of his homeland. The joy keeps growing through "Coco na Roda" -- whose feisty drumbeat and whimsical mix of instruments create a Brazilian version of Mardi Gras music -- and tracks like the lively samba "Gente Boa." But there are some subtle moments as well, including the gentle vocal ballad "Nana" and the gentler samba "Homeopatia." He pays homage to Pascoal with a seductive, "out there" rendition of "Juvenal no Grumar," which blends off meter rhythms with heavy doses of swinging jazz and odd vocal effects. Overall, this is a fascinating collection aimed squarely at lovers of all things Brazilian. ~ Jonathan Widran
Jovino was born on September 18, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He started playing piano at age 13, and by 16 was playing organ in a band called "The Vacancy Group" in Bangu, West Zone of Rio. Jovino got a degree in Biology, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and later from MacDonald College of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. In 1977 he joined the group led by the legendary Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal. In the 15 years that followed, Jovino, along with his colleagues Carlos Malta (saxophones and flute), Itiberê Zwarg (bass), Marcio Bahia (drums), Fabio Pascoal (percussion) and Pernambuco (percussion), created an ensemble under the leadership of Hermeto, that has been considered one of the premier groups in the world. They rehearsed for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, and Hermeto, inspired by their talent and dedication, composed hundreds of themes that ...
