| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
MTV Chart Toppin' Pop songs
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 TWISTED CHRISTMAS collection, may ...
| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
MTV Chart Toppin' Pop album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version of "Singapore" from 1985's Rain Dogs. ...
| | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here CD (1975) Remastered
MTV Chart Toppin' Pop CD music
$14.29 Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California).
Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system.
The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities.
The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of "Welcome to the Machine," a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. "Have a Cigar" further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a "faceless suit," who none-too-innocently ...

| | Best Of Manfred Mann's Earth Band CD (1996)
MTV Chart Toppin' Pop songs
$10.49 The vast majority of British-invasion bands of the '60s either sank into obscurity or had been long broken up by the mid-'70s, but Manfred Mann was an exception to the rule. The band (who changed their name to Manfred Mann's Earth Band) successfully updated their sound along the way, gaining new fans via a more progressive tinge as well as keeping the interest of their longtime admirers. 1996's THE BEST OF MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND is a live collection featuring hits from all eras of the long-standing group's career. Included are renditions of their massive 1976 Bruce Springsteen-penned ...

| | Frida Hyvonen Until Death Comes CD (2006)
MTV Chart Toppin' Pop music CDs
$12.25 Even though Frida Hyvönen sings in American English, with a voice like something between Laura Veirs' and Jenny Lewis', and plays sweet, poppy songs reminiscent of Laura Nyro or Burt Bacharach, there's something about her that reflects her native Sweden. Maybe it's the often sparse, straightforward piano, maybe it's her voice, crackling yet still strong, like spring ice on ponds, maybe it's the lines like "The smell of winter made me sick for love," from "N.Y," or maybe it's just an intangible quality that rests quietly within her phrasing and chord changes, sounding of fish and summer dusk that never really darkens into night. On her debut album, Until Death Comes, which was released in Scandanavia in 2005, Hyvönen turns happy songs into sad ones (for example, the airy progression of "I Drive My Friend" that contrasts with her singing "Now I'd never claim you but I'll want you 'til I'm gone," futilely trying to hide her sorrow), sad into happy, and writes abstractions ...
