#1's album for sale THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information. "Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. #1's songs Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from a traditional folk lament to an urgent, ominous piece of churning tumult. Of course, the group skillfully expanded those roots (with the help of some great writers), and turned out some classic working-class-rebel anthems ("We Gotta Get Out of This Place," "It's My Life"). By '67, the original lineup disbanded, and Eric Burdon led a new batch of Animals into a psychedelic West Coast sound ("San Franciscan Nights," "Monterey"). #1's buy CD music The first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION included a bonus disc featuring rare tracks. Although Lionel Richie was AWOL for most of the '90s, he's still a pop culture force to be reckoned with, and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION ably supports this assertion. Between his work as a frontman for The Commodores, songwriter for other artists, and as a solo act, Richie became the only songwriter to score nine chart-toppers in nine consecutive years. Aside from Kenny Rogers' "Lady" and USA For Africa's "We Are The World," (co-written with Michael Jackson), all the other #1's are here: "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross), "Truly," "Hello," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Say You, Say Me," "Still" and "Three Times A Lady." As one of the few performers from the disco era to have a career beyond one-hit wonder status, Donna Summer has continued forward on her creative path well into the 1990s, necessitating the release of the two-disc THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER. Summer neophytes will get their share of this diva's classic '70s fare including soft-core anthems ("Love to Love You Baby"), streetwalker tributes ("Bad Girls"), erstwhile Jimmy Webb covers ("Macarthur Park") and songs that became ubiquitously associated with proms and weddings ("Last Dance"). Disco aficionados also get a taste of deeper cuts, including "Heaven Knows," "I Feel Love," and "Bad Girls." #1's album for sale This double-disc set puts the studio collaborations of the Supremes and the Temptations--two of Motown's best groups--into one package. Moreover, the track list includes many of the finest songs produced by Berry Gordy's music empire, authored by the likes of Ashford & Simpson, Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye, along with pop hits by Bacharach & David, Lennon & McCartney, and more. Beginning with an uncharacteristically flashy medley, the rest of the set falls right into step. "Try It Baby," "I Second That Emotion," and a "Funky Broadway" are only a few of the treasures here. On disc two, Motown hits "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "I'll Be Doggone" are interspersed with covers such as the Band's "The Weight" and Sly Stone's "Sing a Simple Song." The vocal prowess of the Supremes and the Temptations should go without saying, but it is the lead and harmonic interplay between the members here--the complex, interlocking male-female lines--that really stands out. While newcomers would be advised to first seek out collections by the individual groups, JOINED TOGETHER is a testament to the combined power of two of soul music's greatest.
